Texans hire Bills' Kollar to coach defensive line
19-year coaching vet was second to meet with team about position

The Texans have hired Long-time NFL defensive line coach Bill Kollar to replace Jethro Franklin, who was fired after the season.

Kollar, 56, has been Buffalo's defensive line coach the last three years. He also has coached the defensive line at St. Louis (2001-05) and Atlanta (1990-00). Kollar coached in Super Bowls with the Falcons (1998) and Rams (2001).

During his 19 seasons as a defensive line coach, Kollar has worked for head coaches Jerry Glanville, June Jones, Dan Reeves, Mike Martz and Dick Jauron.

In 19 consecutive seasons as the line coach with the Falcons, Rams and Bills, Kollar has worked for defenses that averaged 37½ sacks. The Texans had 25 sacks last season, and they've averaged 28 in Gary Kubiak's three seasons as coach.

Kollar was a first-round draft choice by Cincinnati in 1974. He played defensive tackle for eight years with the Bengals and Tampa Bay before retiring and entering the coaching profession with the Buccaneers.

Kollar was the second defensive line coach interviewed by the Texans, who were looking to replace Jethro Franklin, who has been hired by USC. The first was Rod Marinelli, who was hired by Chicago.



Looks like a hire from Bush's rolodex. Kollar was a Glanville guy, so he has a history with Bush. Seems to be a good hire.

Now for the trainer and strength coach.

Depends on if they stay stubborn and keep Weaver as the starter or not.

Good catch, that appears to be the connection. And I agree with you, I loved that part of his bio.

How many assistant head coaches do we need? Gibbs, assuming he comes back, had that title didn't he? Are the D and O going to have assistant head coaches along with coordinators? The coaching staff chart must look like a mess.

IMO....It is a way that McNair can open the checkbook just a little wider and not break the unwritten rules/guidelines for the pay scales for assistant coaches. It is purely semantics, as they all do it, and that extra little title keeps the other "assistant" coaches from getting pissy.

Remember too that the Bills were reluctant to let him go too. The Texans maybe had to sweeten the pot a little.

FINALLY! I finally have something to post about. I have been sick to death of this little T-ball team.

We are finally gonna dominate in the trenches on both sides of the ball but on defense..we are gonna SWARM to the ball.

"“One reason he’s a great coach is that he knows what he wants from players, and he’ll do whatever it takes to get it out of them. If they don’t run to the ball, well, they just better run to the ball.”

Schobel mentioned several times about Kollar demanding that his linemen run to the ball no matter where the ball is on the field.

“And I believe you do it in practice, too,” Kollar said. “I try to get the most out of my guys. I want them to play as hard as they can play. What I’ll be doing is trying to get them to fly around the ball.""

You combine this attitude of getting to the ball by the stinkin linemen, adding Gibbs to the secondary and Bush's mentality of being a much more violent defense with our linemen penetrating the line and not running sideways...yeah, we're trying to win the division.

2009 is gonna be our best season. Expect 10 to 12 game wins. No joke.

I'm thinking you'll get that wish because Kollar wants a light speed rusher.
