View Full Version : Official Texans vs. Jaguars Game Thread, 9/15/2019
The 0-1 Texans first home game of the year sees the 0-1 Jacksonville Jaguars coming to town. The Jags put up a hefty fight against the KC Chiefs last week but eventually succumbed 40-26 and lost starting QB Nick Foles for a very long time in the process. Backup rookie QB Gardner Minshew accounted himself well in a relief debut going 22/25, 275 yds, 2 TDs, 1 INT.
The Texan defense will need to do better than they did against the Saints in their season opener losing 30-28 in New Orleans on MNF. The Texan offense did well but had some "slow" spots. With all the new players on both sides of the ball, the Texans are still a bit "under construction".
I like the Texans to win here but 9 pts (or so) seems like a lot against a physical Jags team - they seem to always give the Texans a scrap whatever their record is.....

At least we know the Texans won't be tanking for draft position. They'll be tanking because they just suck. Miami could have two Top 5 picks next spring. Well played, Houston.
Don't fall asleep on Gardner Minshew - he has looked good all the way through camp. He might (might) be the next rags-to-riches NFL quarterback.
Why would MNF schedule Cleveland - Jets?? Answer: 50th anniversary of the first MNF game which had Howard, Don and Keith Jackson in the first three-man booth to see the Browns beat Joe Namath. Expect them to reference this oh about 50 times.
Hilight from that broadcast: Pass is thrown to Browns WR Fair Hooker. Dandy Don chirps "I've never met a fair hooker..." I'm sure ABC's switchboard lit up.

I have seen NFL QBs far worse than Gardner Minshew. Like, last weekend.
Texans promote QB Alex McGough to active roster, cut Cornell Armstrong (https://www.chron.com/sports/texans/article/Texans-promote-quarterback-Alex-McGough-active-14429092.php):
The Texans promoted former Jacksonville Jaguars and Seattle Seahawks quarterback Alex McGough to their active roster from the practice squad, according to a league source not authorized to speak publicly.
The Jaguars had McGough in mind for a backup spot with starter Nick Foles on injured reserve with a broken collarbone, but the Texans were proactive about making sure McGough was on their active roster.
McGough was with the Jaguars during the preseason before joining the Texans on an upgraded practice squad salary worth over $20,000 per week, according to a league source not authorized to speak publicly.
So, the Jags probably wanted McGough back but the Texans promoted him to the 53. Watson's back (not debilitating at this point) probably also had something to do with it....

He was good, highly accurate vs the Chiefs this past weekend.
Started the game with like 8 consecutive completions.

1) If nothing else, the Texans should be milking this guy for what he knows about the Jags' playbook. "If they line up like this, they're going to do that. If they spread out like this, it means they're going to throw a screen, etc."
2) I would not be shocked at all if we learn later on that Watson cracked his tailbone trying to stick the landing and the Texans will hide it for as long as possible. Watch for a few teams (maybe the Jags) to aim for his butt when they close in on the tackle.
There's no sympathy in this league.

Per CBS, WR Marquise Lee and CB A.J. Bouye will be out for Sunday's game with injuries.
Money coming in on the Jags has dropped the spread to 7 in some places. Not a good sign.
Texans really could use a W here even though the upcoming schedule has weakened a bit with QB problems some of the other teams are experiencing (Luck, Newton, Foles)....
Liberty white day.
Texans win the toss and defer, Jags with the ball first.
Touchback, ball placed at the 25.
Jags get one first down, get sacked, have to punt.
After the punt, the Texans will start at their 17.
11:52 left in the 1st qtr.
Texans go 3 and out and have to punt.
Jags will start at their 26.
10:30 left in the 1st qtr.
Texans put a drive together dinkin' and dunkin', some nice runs. Have to settle for a Fairbairn 39-yarder.
Texans 3, Jags 0
1:54 left in the 1st qtr.

Jalen Ramsey being Jalen Ramsey.

Deshaun should get rid of the ball faster.
Jags get on the board with a Lambo 40-yard FG.
Texans 3, Jags 3
3:17 left in the first half.

Antonio Brown scores TD pass from Brady. Brown is now wearing #17 to match his IQ.
Texans put a drive together in the last few minutes of the half. Have to settle for a Fairbairn 22-yarder because time is running out. But, hey, we still got two timeouts left for the timeout savings account.
Texans 6, Jags 3
Halftime.

It's hilarious that your dislike of the pick years ago still informs how you view the guy now.

Not using a TO on the play with just over 30 seconds left was idiotic. At that point you have 2 timeouts and you end up taking two with you to halftime instead of running 2 more plays if you call it there.

Glad you enjoy it. First-round speed. Sixth-round hands (with apologies to most sixth-rounders). Stills may be an assclown but he clearly has better hands than Fuller. What round was Stills drafted in?

If you want to say 1st round talent with 6th round ability to stay healthy then you're right. But he's got 11 TDs in 17 games with Watson. His hands work just fine.
And what exactly is wrong with Stills? The random unprompted attack on him combined with the knock on Antonio Brown's intelligence in a Texans thread makes me think you've already had too much and your racist side is showing through earlier then normal.

Jalen Ramsay wanted to fight his coach but had no interest in hitting Duke Johnson on that 3rd down run. I guess he's only passionate sometimes.

Is Deandre Carter back there to catch punts or not? He seems to have no interest in any punt that can't be returned. He's probably cost us 40 yards today just by being unwilling to catch it.

Snoozer of a 3rd qtr. Texans sticking to the run to get themselves out of the hole as the 4th qtr starts.
Score remains:
Texans 6, Jags 3

Hold on, we have a major turnover! Watt with the strip sack and fumble recovery! Texans with the ball at the Jag 11!

Mercilous with the strip sack for the 2nd time. He's been the only pass rush in both games.
Watson keeps on 4th and 1 and we have a touchdown!

Correction: the Bungles didn't get the memo.

Can we stop forcing them into passing situations so they will keep running Fournette into the middle of the line.
Lambo makes good on a 32-yard FG.
Texans 13, Jags 6
6:01 left in the game.
Run it down their throats!
Jags with the ball at their 32 with 3:36 left in the game. Obviously got to keep them out of the end zone....

After we can't stop them in the air at all they go back to the up the middle run that has gotten them nothing all game. Honestly they got stopped on 4th down earlier in that drive on the same play and got a gift.
Jags get the TD with 30 seconds left.
Jags going for the two point conversion.
Whew! Fournette stopped just short! I thought the 2nd effort was going to get it but Reid pushes him back.....
Play was reviewed and stands as called.

Stupid Texans (too many men). Stupid Jags (running a gut play for 2 points). Big hit at the goal line by Reid.
Texans get the onsides kick and run the clock out.
Final score:
Texans 13, Jags 12
Well, it was a pretty ugly W.....

Once again the rest of the division sucks worse than we do.
Raise your hand if you involuntarily screamed "timeout!" at the TV at the close of the first half.
--------------------------------------------
Watson seemed a little off today.....just a little.... yeah, he was 16/29 and even had a few drops but the accuracy didn't seem to be all there. First quarter or so, it looked like the plan was dink and dunk and not get him (Watson) killed. Later it was like "eff it, let's get some chunk yardage" and he starts taking more hits and even runs it in himself for a TD. Still, I gotta think his back is bothering him......
--------------------------------------------
Early line (http://www.madduxsports.com/nfl-odds.php) has the Chargers as a 3½ pt favorite over the Texans next Sunday. This would be an excellent game to steal a win - a conference road game. They can do it, but they are 1-5 all time vs. Chargers...

Dreadful game, but we all know a W is a W... especially good to win the first one, win in the division, and win at home. Good teams find a way to win these on days when they don't have it.
And not to be a Texans homer... but let's remember how this game is coming on a short week after a rather deflating game where defeat was grabbed from the clutches of victory in New Orleans. Apologies to Mercilus who provided the key play, but this was something of an early trap game where just dumb luck get the Texans to face a rookie backup QB who essentially gifted the Texans with their winning TD.
Tunsil returned from what seems to be a minor injury, whew. So a good test coming up next on the road to the Chargers before a pair of games at home leading up to the roadies at KC and Indy.

Oddly enough I felt better last Monday coming off of our loss to the Saints than I do this morning after our first victory, but 1-1 sure does seem much better than 0-2.

SD and Houston may both be 1-1, but I don't think they're in the same hemisphere in terms of talent. Chargers should win easily if they overcome their Charger-esque talent for employing crappy kickers.
