Presuming none of the QBs in this draft are the next Dak Prescott, how do you fill the QB void for 2017?

1) Sign Colin Kaepernick for 1 yr/ $9 million
2) Sign Jay Cutler for 2 yrs/ $25 million
3) Trade our #1 pick to New England for Jimmy Garoppolo and a 3rd in 2018
4) Trade our #3 pick to Cincinnati for A.J. McCarron
5) Trade our #7 pick to Oakland for Matt McGloin
6) Other (specify)
7) Hope Savage and Weedon can stay healthy for a full year while developing a QB we drafted.

I don't touch the 1st six options on your list.

Yeah, I'd prefer 7 of those choices, take best player avail when we draft, hopefully a good QB in top 3 rounds. Don't mind a little reach in draft. Gotta try it.

There is definitely not a QB available I'd give up draft picks for. I'd rather just draft one and sign one.

That's fine and may be the correct answer. Just be prepared to own it if we get to the wild card game again and have to rely on our own version of Connor Cook to advance. And be prepared to hear more whining about how we're wasting J.J. Watt's career and not seriously addressing the QB position.

What do Kaep, Smokin' Jay, and a bunch of career backups have to do with wasting Watt's career? Who have you heard whining that we wasted his career by not signing more retreads or not trading for more backups? That's been our literal plan at QB the entire time we've been wasting his career.

Let's answer the Savage question once and for all....

What do Kaep, Smokin' Jay, and a bunch of career backups have to do with wasting Watt's career?

The first two options give us a playoff-experienced veteran who can be a short-term solution while whomever we draft gets up to speed. The others are just more-affordable options if Kaepernick and Cutler don't suit you.

Who have you heard whining that we wasted his career

It's been all over this board. Unless you believe Tom Brady will declare free agency or Peyton Manning comes out of retirement, these are the options we have to work with.

Tell me, oh wise one, where are we getting this Super-Bowl ready QB to start with the Texans this year? You're stuck with table scraps. Gotta make the best you can out of them.

Conveniently omitting

by not signing more retreads or not trading for more backups?

and therefore perverting the point entirely.

Yep. The idea that anyone will complain we didn't sign Kaep or Cutler is absurd. I have led the whining about QB, and all the whining has been entirely about us not drafting a guy.

Bob, you either have serious reading comprehension problems or you just unashamedly lie to make the facts fit the narrative you're most comfortable with.

Would you be happier right now if we had taken Bridgewater or Bortles over Clowney? We took Kevin Johnson at #16 the following year and the next QB taken after him was Garrett Grayson at #76. Do you want him? Last year, they took Jacoby Jones 2.0 but they thought they already had their QB of the future so they loaded up on pass catchers. Should they have drafted Paxton Lynch or Christian Hackenberg?

So would you trade for him now, knowing the Patriots want a #1 pick in return?

If all they want is #25, then I lean heavily yes...I'd trade for him. I'd put him above any of the QB prospects.

If they want #25 plus another 1st next year I would need to really think about it (especially since we'd have no 2nd rounder next year either).

No way do I give up a first for him. Any trade for him will include paying a giant contract extension for him. So you give up your first round pick for the right to pay $20 Million a year for a guy who has less history than Brock. The risk/reward tilts way too far in the wrong direction.

The main value of a rookie QB is they are cheap. Even a 1st round pick is about a quarter of a low end starter salary wise.

And yes Bob. I would have been happier if they tried to draft a QB and failed. Getting a great QB in this league is hard and usually involves a fair amount of luck. There is no shame in not having one. It is admirable to build a quality team without one. But it is beyond comprehension to let year after year pass without investing draft picks in the QB position.

I agree, the price for Garrapolo is too high given the track record of Brady understudies cut loose from the Patriots, even when getting back a 3rd in 2018 to help offset the loss of our #2 pick in the Osweiler deal.

The trade I would make, if it could happen, is getting A.J. McCarron from the Bengals for a third or (hopefully) a fourth. He hardly played in 2016 behind Andy Dalton but he looked satisfactory in late-season action in 2015 when Dalton was hurt. His QB rating for his career is 97.1 and he has playoff experience (would have won expect for the Bonehead Brothers of Burfict and Jones).

Flashy? No. Strong arm? No. But comes from a winning tradition (national championship QB at Alabama), plays under control and limits mistakes.

I know a lot of you will sniff "retread" but I think he's good enough to win with *this year* instead of waiting for somebody who can win in '18 or '19. He's not going to break the bank and, given Smith's record with second-day choices, a third is not too much to give up.

Since he's not going to cost a lot, he's easily tradeable or releaseable if/when the time comes that our QBOTF is ready to step in. My problem with Kaep and Cutler is not cost as much as they turn into whiny bitches after a couple of losses and alienate their teammates. THAT'S why both are still on the market today, not because they want too much money.

Of course, if we never fix our OL problems, the question becomes moot.

I don't mind McCarron for a 4th, I don't like it for a 3rd. This is assuming we still pick a QB in the first 2 rounds. I don't think he's a retread because he has not yet been 'tread'. He's a career backup. But if O'Brien looks at film and likes him more that Savage (or even as much), then give it a shot.

I don't think we are at a place where we should take one shot at fixing this. Since all shots are long shots (at least in terms of 2017 QB play), we should take 3-4 simultaneous shots, let them all fight for the job, and hope one of them works. I compare it to when Seattle signed Matt Flynn AND drafted Russell Wilson and then let the mid round rookie beat out the FA in camp.

I want us to draft a QB early (round 1 or 2), draft a QB late (day 3), sign a veteran, and throw them all in a bag with Savage and see who fights their way out.

I could live with that, Barrett. We need to go QB/OL or OL/QB in the first two rounds, trade a mid-round pick for a competent backup and keep Savage and Weeden. With that many, not sure we need to use the 7th on another QB. That would already be four in camp.

The remaining draft picks would be to shore up the defense (DL, edge, safety, CB) and possibly pick up another OG or RB.

If you trade a mid-round pick then bring in a UDFA. Maybe he beats out Savage or the competent backup for the 3rd spot. Basically throw young bodies at the problem in the short term.

Remember next year draft is supposed to have 5 or more potential franchise quality QBs. As opposed to almost all longshots in this year's draft.

I hear stuff like that I wonder who they are talking about. Two years ago, before the season started, who knew about Goff? Who knew about Wentz? Yes, this is a down year for QBs but you never know and, hopefully, next year we're still drafting in the 20s. so the "franchise" QBs may still be out of reach, particularly if they are *obvious* franchise QBs.

Any QB who is on the radar for more than 1 season ends up falling after scouts get time to pick them apart. A year ago Deshaun Watson was a super prospect and #1 pick. He was better than any QB in the 2016 draft. Then a year went by where he won the national championship and his draft stock did nothing but fall. I never buy it when they project QBs a year out. Half of those 5 will be day 2-3 picks by next year. And some strong armed small school guy with limited tape will be the first QB off the board.

What happened to Watson in 2017 was 17 interceptions, more than any other QB considered in the top half of the draft. One reason the draftniks are smitten with Trubisky is that he was only picked six times.

I'm not disagreeing or pushing Watson. I'm saying the longer a guy is a QB prospect the worse it is for him. More film means more chances to find problems. I can't think of the last QB prospect who was a big name, came back, and improved his stock. Andrew Luck I guess.

Yes, and when you get right to it, Andrew Luck hasn't lived up to his own billing, partly due to injury and partly due to a dumb-ass front office that hasn't built a good team around him. It must be tough having to be "the next Manning". There's no denying his talent but I don't think he's provided the results everyone expected.
