View Full Version : Official Texans vs. Chargers Game Thread, 11/27/2016
It's Week 12 and the 4-6 San Diego Chargers are coming to NRG stadium to take on the 6-4 Texans Sunday at noon. The Chargers are coming off their bye week and should be somewhat rested/healed up. QB Philip Rivers is having a another good year throwing for 2,886 yards at a 62.1% completion rate with 20 TDs and 11 INTs and a 92.0 rating although 7 of his INTs have occured in the last three games. RB Melvin Gordon (838 yards rushing, 346 receiving) takes care of just about all the running back duties and is on a pace for 400 touches. The Chargers recently acquired RB Ronnie Hillman for some relief. Rivers has a plethora of targets in the passing game: WR's Tyrel Williams, Travis Benjamin, Dontrelle Inman; TE's Hunter Henry, Anotonio Gates and the aforementioned Gordon coming out of the backfield. The San Diego defense ranks 21st allowing 361.9 yds/gm and 28th in pts/game allowing 27.8. The Texans should be able to move the ball and put up some points....
The Texans are coming off 27-20 loss to the Raiders on MNF and should be motivated to get back on a winning track....

I wonder if DHOP is injured...I get it you're getting double teamed. But so is every other top receiver in the league. How does AJ Green, Julio Jones, and OBJ still get their numbers each week. I would hate to say "maybe DHOP is not as good as we thought". There is literally no separation...

I wonder if not winning the division will be enough to get BOB fired.I'm hoping OB bolts to Notre Dame at this point. He's obviously had to dumb down this offense for this POS QB, but he's the one who sticks with him and obviously doesn't have the nads to make a change. A lot of his in-game coaching decisions have been questionable as well. Doubt it could get any worse with a HC and QB change. This team is a complete bore.

Starting anyone other than BO would directly defy the owner's wishes.
Of course starting BO is a losing proposition.
This is kind of interesting..... the announcers brought up something about the 1st down play calling and it made me look back through the thread. I pulled all the 1st down plays at the start of a drive..
Start of drives, play called on 1st down:
1. L Miller for 6.
2. Pass to Fido gets 8.
3. Hunt goes left side for 16.
4. Pass to Fuller along the sideline gets 13.
5. Pass to B Miller gets 7 but holding on Clark backs it up.
6. L Miller up the gut for none.
7. L Miller up the gut for no gain.
8. Pass to Fuller gets 7.
9. Pass to Fido gets 16.
10. L Miller up the gut for 1.
11. Pass to Griffin gets 7.
12. (Incomplete hail Mary pass)
So, that's 5 rushes and 7 passes. All of the passes were completed for good 1st down yardage except for the hail Mary attempt so, 6/7 were completed. L Miller got 7 total yards on 4 attempts rushing. Hunt had 16 yards on his one rushing attempt.
Conclusion: Don't run L Miller on 1st down because they know it's coming....
Early line (http://www.madduxsports.com/nfl-odds.php) has the Packers as a 4.5 pt favorite over the Texans next Sunday...

We'll see how badly the Packers suck tonight and perhaps check the weather reports before determining the line. Osweiler, fwiw, is a Montana kid that seemed unbothered by cold weather while he was in Denver.

Starting anyone other than BO would directly defy the owner's wishes.I'm half thinking at this point that OB had very little input into signing Osweiler and is now just doing a big FU to McNut/Smith by leaving him in there. Who the hell knows with this chump franchise.

Coming off of O'Briens second season right after winning the AFC South it seems hard to imagine he wouldn't have atleast veto power about signing a QB he didn't like ?

It is well known that the BO signing was driven by the owner and possibly Rick Smith. McNair was the force behind the signing and BOB had zero input. The owner wants BO to play. BOB is realizing that he can't play, at least not in his system. That's why there is mounting speculation that BOB will walk after this year.
Either way it's a team in complete chaos. Personally I haven't seen a Texan offense so out of whack since the Carr years. It's the exact same feeling. I watch the Texans slapdick around out there for sixty minutes and then watch another team, ANY other team, and it looks like they're playing a totally different sport.
Although it was fun to watch Lickey make stupid decision after stupid decision last night.

OK, just out of curiosity, I went through all the first down plays. Sometimes there was a penalty on the Texans that backed the ball up but technically, it was still first down, i.e. 1st and 20. Listed below are all the first down plays that occurred during the drive, not the first play of the drive.
1. Oz can't find a receiver on the rollout and throws it away, inc.
2. L Miller for 2.
3. L Miller gets 1.
4. L Miller to the 1/2 yard line.
5. L Miller for 7.
6. Oz pressured, throws it towards the sideline and is INT'ed by the Chargers.
7. Oz is sacked.
8. Pass to Hop goes to midfield, 1st down.
9. L Miller goes left side for nice gainer, fumbles at the end but the ref rules him down. 20 yards.
10. L Miller goes left side for 11, 1st down at the Charger 17.
11. L Miller loses 3.
12. Oz's pass way over the head of Fido and INT'ed.
13. Pass to B Miller gets 12, 1st down.
14. Deep pass to Hop out of bounds, uncatchable.
15. Pass to Griffin gets 15.
16. Pass to L Miller gets 5.
17. Oz spikes it with 18 seconds left.
That is 7 rushes and 10 passes/attempts. The last six were all passes as the Texans were trying to catch up late in the game. Curiously, Oz threw 2 INT's on first downs.
Totals including the 1st play of the drive, all first down plays: 12 rushes, 17 passes.
Conclusion: L Miller carried the ball 11 of the 12 rushes on first down. He ran for 3 yards or less 7 times. The four other times, he was productive. The first down passes run the gamut of good to bad.
