View Full Version : Official Texans @ Raiders Game Thread, 11/21/2016
Week 11 finds the 6-3 Texans heading to Mexico City to play the 7-2 Oakland Raiders on MNF. The Raiders are coming off their bye week but previously had defeated the Denver Broncos 30-20 at home. QB Derek Carr is having an exceptional year passing for 2,505 yards, 17 TDs, 3 INTs and has a 99.1 rating. He is top ten in most of the NFL QB statistics. The bulk of the rushing will be done by Latavius Murray (393 yds), Deandre Washington (302 yds) and Jalen Richard (279 yds). Leading receivers are Amari Cooper (843 yds), Michael Crabtree (596 yds) and Seth Roberts (277 yds).
According to ESPN writer Sarah Barshop, since Week 7, the Texans are averaging more yards per rush (4.8) than yards per pass attempt (4.3). The Texans will need to get the passing game going in order to have a shot at winning .....

Elo ratings (http://fivethirtyeight.com/datalab/nfl-elo-ratings-are-back/), a simple system that estimates each team’s skill level using only the final scores and locations of each game
The average NFL team has an ELO rating of 1500. The Texans currently have a rating of 1535 (http://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2016-nfl-predictions/?ex_cid=rrpromo). #1 is Seattle with 1664. The Texans highest rating ever (http://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/complete-history-of-the-nfl/#hou) was 1685 - Week 13, 2012 right after defeating the Titans 24-10. The Texans fell off the cliff after that game and are still recovering....
They have the Texans with a 86% chance to win the division (http://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2016-nfl-predictions/?ex_cid=rrpromo) and a 20% chance to get a first round bye. Curiously, they have the Texans vs. Oakland game as a coinflip - 50:50.

How does an official miss that call? He is right on the sideline staring down Hopkins running for a TD, and he blows a call in the only way that will not allow replay to fix his mistake. That is the kind of thing that should cost a guy a spot in an NFL crew. We have replay to fix almost every call, just don't blow your whistle and let replay get it right.
The ensuing kickoff is a touchback. Raider's ball at their 25.
--------------------------------------------
Short pass to Crabtree results in a loss of 5.
Clowney nabs the runner in the backfield, loss of 4.

I thought it was pretty clear he's in bounds. Either way you need to err on the side that allows you to get the call right with replay. When you blow your whistle you have guaranteed you can't fix it.
But then we don't challenge Miller's run? Mack pulled Miller on top of himself and Miller rolls a yard past the first down marker.

Then the officials blow 2 spots in our favor. NFL football is played to exacting standards across the board, but they allow officials to blow over half of the spots. And half the time it's not their fault. They're guessing at spots from impossible angles behind the ball half the time.

Well, the good news is it took a full quarter to embarrass themselves as the group of fking incompetents that they are.
Also, you notice that whenever the Texans get a takeaway under these circumstances it is business as usual but a team that actually wants to win goes for the end zone right away?
The Texans, losers that they are, were playing for three points that first drive.
Ervin muffs the ensuing kickoff and the Raiders recover at the Texan 19. Raider's ball.

It's been like that for weeks now. I am shocked we get any yards at all on those plays with such an obvious tendency.
We look good on 3rd down tonight, but we haven't put the ball downfield yet, and the raiders DBs are sitting on our short routes. You won't do great trying to throw fastballs into tiny windows against squatting DBs. We need to throw it downfield at some point.

This is a game O'Brien will want to forget ever happened. So many terrible executive decisions.
Namely, throwing on 3rd and goal when they were just going to kick the field goal. Terrible spots on consecutive plays... challenge on third down and kick on fourth down for the late game lead. Then punting with three minutes in the game down seven points when your defense just allowed 14 unanswered points, including a 75-yd TD reception to a FULLBACK.
If O'Brien makes just one of these late calls correctly, the team maybe wins or forces OT.
Refs sucked, turf sucked, yadda yadda... the Texans were the better team and lost because of O'Brien.

This game was stolen from us from right under our noses...were there some questionable decisions...probably. but the refs screwed us on multiple critical situations.
The game was stolen by the officials.
But whether we are 6-4 or 7-3 really doesn't matter. This team is going nowhere. We are the Washington Generals. Our head coach just punted from mid field on 4th and medium with 1 TO and 3 minutes left. And he did this after not challenging the clearly blown call on the 3rd down spot.
He did this while coaching the broken $72 million QB he never met before our GM signed said QB. And he did it while our Owner made another $100+ million this year as his reward for hiring these idiots. And that is why our owner won't speak one word about the way we were blatantly cheated tonight.
So we'll win 8 games instead of 9 this year because of the officials' incompetence, but does that really matter when we know how our season ends either way?
barrett
11-21-2016, 11:12 PM
And I forgot to mention O'Brien did it all while playing against the best young QB in the NFL, Derek Carr, who we desperately needed to draft but we didn't because our owner was afraid our fans wouldn't like his last name.
That is proof that McNair cares far more about money than he does about winning.

The officials made one terrible, irreversible call. All of the other atrocities (save the fourth down fk up) were completely reversible by good decisions by the head coach. That would-be Texans touchdown would not have decided the game.
The Texans scored only 20 points against a bad defense and captured no sacks. The refs were terrible but you can't hang on that. BO is horrible, he was a terrible sign that the head coach had nothing to do with.

The failure to overturn the call O'Brien did challenge is just as bad. The fact that every crew around the league all but refuses to overturn missed spots does not excuse the fact that Hunt is on video lying across the 1st down marker. They went under the hood, saw they were wrong, and fell back on the 'call stands' garbage so they wouldn't have to admit it.
It is one of the most embarrassing things about the NFL that they have a naturally biased ref review his own call under a canvas hood. If the NFL cared at all about accuracy, they would get rid of the challenge system and handle all reviews in New York with a neutral official and a bank of 4K TV screens. Instead the NFL makes a mini-game out of review and convinces fans that it is the coach's fault that the refs compounded their incompetence with willful negligence.
I truly don't care who won tonight so I don't say the game was stolen to let O'Brien off the hook. O'Brien punting is a nail in the coffin for me. I won't watch another complete game this season. But none of that excuses the asinine NFL replay system and how poorly it is applied.

Yes, and this is how the Texans ended up playing this game in Mexico City. The team damn near lost 40% of its OL on a single play. If O'Brien doesn't take at least $50K in fines after this game I'll be disappointed.
"I'm not going to sit up here and get fined."
Direct quotation from your head coach at his press conference.

Also, he thought that last Texans play was fourth and six rather than fourth and four.
He truly is too stupid to be a bus driver.

O'Brien lacks the general IQ to be truly successful consistently. He will get work in the league for a long time after he leaves Houston... Nine win seasons will look great to mediocre and worse teams like the Browns, Rams, and others who, to paraphrase another mouth breather Jeff Fisher, are continually struggling through some 7-9 bullshit.
The strength of this team throughout O'Brien's tenure has clearly been the defense, seemingly the part of the on-field product O'Brien influences the least.
OB really needs to get his booth communication fixed because someone ain't doing their job. The B Miller rolled over Mack for the 1st down should have been caught by someone upstairs. The 3rd down L Miller run near the Raider goal line was another that was missed. No one contacted OB as far as I can tell. OB is on the field and he can't see that sh** - someone upstairs has to tell him when he has a good case.....
Hop's catch and run at the start of the game....dunno... still haven't seen a definitive replay. There was one look where it looked like his heel might've been out of bounds but was it really on the ground and not elevated? Dunno....
The spotting of the ball on the 4th and 1 call on Hunt's run was just all f'ed up. OB challenges but no bueno. The refs f'ed up. I'm still mad.... next time gain two yards and don't leave it the refs...
--------------------------------------------------
The defense was so good except for those two or three mistakes. Some credit goes to the Raiders for figuring out those weaknesses....
--------------------------------------------------
Oz seems to bounce between accurate and inaccurate - drives me crazy. He shoulda been INT'ed about 3 or 4 times..

He may even go on to win a Super Bowl a couple of years after the owner fires him (three years after he should have fired him).

I never like the 'don't leave it to the refs' logic. I don't mean this as an attack on you at all, I've just never liked it. If a team doesn't deserve to win because they were only slightly better and the refs were able to steal it from them because the difference was so slight, then the other team deserves to win even less since they left it up to the refs to steal it for them.
I understand officials make mistakes. But we should never accept officials blowing things. They should be held accountable just like we hold players and coaches accountable. Officials should lose jobs when they blow calls that cost players and coaches jobs.
But the NFL treats their officials as sacred cows. They build a wall of silence around them that the NBA and MLB don't. No self evaluation, no ownership of mistakes, no accountability, nothing. They prop them up with replay rather than correcting them with it. And in a game of inches, they let refs pick winners.

I fully accept that the refs fked this up today. I also recognize that each and every Raiders touchdown came immediately after a shockingly stupid BOB fkup.
To pin this on the refs is to minimize the outrageous idiocy on the part of the Texans staff, particularly its head coach.
As an aside, I do find it incredible how much worse the NFL refs are now since, well, since those fkwits were locked out. Odd, that.
Things that make you go hmmmm...
The Texans, one of the least penalized teams in the NFL were penalized 7 times for 101 yards.
The Raiders, who recently set a record for penalties in one game, were penalized 4 times for 21 yards....
Hmmm....
barrett: no sweat, we all have our opinions, don't we?...

I don't think BOB's stupidity and the refs incompetence are mutually exclusive. I don't think either being true lets the other off the hook.
I really like this comment seen in another forum:
"Bad Reffing does not mix well with bad coaching".
I think that pretty much sums it up......

That's fair. I just don't want people to fixate on the epic officiating incompetence and miss the brutal head coaching idiocy.
Also, there were maybe four BO passes that should have been intercepted. BO is wildly inaccurate.

Yea a real tough loss, but there were some positives to take from the game and that's led by the play of the run defense and the running game.
Osweiller was very fortunate to have only one interception because he threw atleast 2 passed directly at DBs, so he's still clearly a work-in-progress and clearly our QB thru 2016.
Many of you folks are upset and repeatedly promise to stop following the team - right, I'll see you back here in a few days for the game in NRG vs the Chargers.
And don't know what to do about the refs since we are only an average team at this point and not good enough to overcome calls like they made last night.

Well, Oakland was a 6.5-pt favorite and - shazzam! - Oakland wins by 7. That's all I needed to know.
Perhaps the chain gang was using the Metric system.
www.footballzebras.com has no comment yet on their blog which is disappointing. You can't have a night like last night and say nothing about it.
I thought this was Osweiler's best game to date. He was finally using both wideouts and tight ends, was converting third downs, etc. That's not to confuse this with Peyton Manning 1999-2013 but it was better than watching Hoyer-to-Shorts.
Dumb coaching decisions, let's start with passing up the field goal try to take the 4th-quarter lead after watching the refs blow the spot on third down? In the end, the Texans' defense wore down in the altitude and Oakland got a TD anyway but Coaching 101 says you take the sure lead late in the game anytime it's offered.
At least the Texans didn't roll over and play dead like they did in Foxboro and Minnesota. I'd rather bitch about a close loss than a no-show loss.
Oh, and we're still in first place plus Luck can't play Thursday against the Steelers so we still have a solid division lead. Still three games left in our division where we ought to win at least two.
Eyes on the prize folks.

"What a screw job by the refs in that game. I actually felt sorry for the Texans for a while there. Then of course, they allow the Raiders to go 85 yards in 5 plays, then punt when you know there's little chance of getting the ball back. Combination of terrible officiating and terrible coaching. Thanks for nothing, guys!"
"I don't like O'brien, but in fairness it must be tough to win games in the NFL when your team has to gain 13 yards for a 1st down and not go anywhere near the sideline."
"I can see why he didn't challenge the 3rd down spot, as bad as it was. It's so hard to win challenges and timeouts are so important, he figured they'd just get the 4th and inches. And they DID get it, but got screwed yet again, even after replay. "
"But, even with that Bill O'Brien is the dumbest HC in the league. Not challenging, punting with 3 minutes to go and just one timeout, and not going for it at mid field on 4th and inches when he has a 6'8" QB are three examples of his stupidity that was on full display last night. If I owned the Texans O'Brien would have been unemployed by the time we hit American air space, and not just because of one game he's been terrible for a while now."
"Some bad calls, but O'Brien was coaching like he was listening to some random douchebag in a gameday thread."
"Gotta be kinda hard when the refs decided which teams gonna win before O'Brien gets to make any gameday decisions. "
"I can't stand O'Brien but they got ******. 10 points, minimum."
"O'Brien is not a good game day coach. "
"That implies he's good the other 6 days; little evidence of that."
"I don't like O'brien, ......"
"....Bill O'Brien is the dumbest HC in the league...."
"I can't stand O'Brien ...."
"O'Brien is not a good game day coach. "
Bronco fans? Kinda vitriolic, eh? Didn't realize our coach was so polarizing.... Sounds like they're just upset we didn't help them out....
