So our top pick in 2015, Kevin Johnson, gets his first official start with Kareem out.
Bad news about Clowney. Sounds like he's out again. He was playing pretty good, against the run and he was getting some pressure on the QB, even though no sacks. Hope he gets back sometime this year.
Wonder about Xaviar if there's any chance he shows up at LG in South FLA this Sunday ?

Thinking that Johnson has started the last two games at CB and Kareem started at S. Could be wrong though.

Really. I knew Kareem was playing some safety, but didn't know he was starting there ?
FWIW Texans depth chart shows him and Joseph as the starting corners, with no mention of him at either safety spot.

We have a tendency to make average QBs look fantastic. However, I have been really pleased with Kevin Johnson. He has had a few iffy plays but for the most part he looks better than Kareem. I don't know if it's the scheme or what but Kareem has been beaten a lot this year IMO.
Concerning the pass rush either Jacksonville is REALLY REALLY bad or Clowneys not ready to start. I'm still not sure yet. Maybe both.
We seemed to get more pressure and were more sound in our gap integrity against the run. Granted they didn't have their starting tailback playing.
This is a toss up game for me...inconsistent offense has the potential to play really well or really bad. And defense has just been bad to start games.
So we'll know by the end of the 1st qtr what team will show up. More importantly we will know who this team really is.

Against Jacksonville I thought the Covington - Dunn combination was a lot more productive than the Wilfork - Crick combination.

Agree. The aging vet signings never seem to work out for them.
This is a somewhat pivotal game (and it sucks that a pivotal game is occurring in October). Win and the Texans can make things interesting again. Lose and the season changes: a shift to a grading session for the roster and coaches, focus on the draft, etc....

As a coach myself, I understand that anybody can be on the wrong end of a blowout. So I'm not too concerned about a blowout. I'm more concerned about the lack of adjustments from week to week and the lack of development by our young talent.
Plain and simple Romeo needs to be handed his walking papers and the offensive coordinator needs to lose his playcalling duties. Neither has shown any ability to get better...

Is he calling the plays? I do believe he deserves a part of the blame. But I am not of the belief that because he has HC next to his name that he is always to blame.
I do believe that he does not always let us in on the inner workings of the team. Yes, he (or whomever REALLY had the last say so on our QB debacle) should take some blame.

The HC is always most responsible among the coaching staff. BOB has total control of his staff. He hired them. He leads them and directs and approves the game plan. Their failure is his failure.
And I cannot imagine why anybody would think he did not have all the say on the QB position. He personally acquired former players and declared them his guys. Then he juggled them every time they played like the terrible QBs they are. You can let responsibility for this debacle of a franchise run up hill from O'Brien since Smith works with BOB on personnel and McNair hired them both, but it is dumb to make scape goats of the coordinators.

That's your opinion. But the truth of the matter is that no one but the necessary personnel knows who has total control on this team. We only know what they tell us.
Don't get me wrong I am not saying that Bill doesn't deserve SOME of the blame. But to blame him for it ALL is foolish and ignorant. He doesn't call any plays and he's not on the field. If anything he needs to hold somebody accountable and make some adjustments...

Who blamed only O'Brien? They can all get in line behind McNair for blame.
Also, it makes no difference what any of us do, we'll still be in this situation.
It's the nature of Houston sports (save for a couple of Rocket championships) for as long as I can remember and that goes back to the early 60's.....
Today was a golden opportunity to make something of the season, gain ground on the Colts (who lost) and turn this thing around. What do the Texans do? They fall flat on their faces.....not a close game loss, not a competitive loss, just a complete no-fight 1st round knockout...

Absolutely disgusting. The Dolphins are a shit team. To get embarrassed by a shit team should be a wake up call. But as long as eighty thousand necks show up every other week McSenile will keep laughing.
Just how bad will it get before people wake up?
Wake up and do what, come back next week and watch them play again just as you do every week?
Amazing, but we are still only a game out of first place - yep the Colts lost again today.

I think last years success (relatively speaking) kind of screwed us...
Here me out...just my opinion
I believe the original plan was to clean house. But the relative success blinded us. We started to believe that maybe we could win with trash. BOB probably drank a little of the koolaid as well. So instead of following through Mission "remove all reminents of the Kubiak era"...we began mission "put a bandaid on a broke leg"...as a result we brought back scrubs and BOB started looking for his game manager...
Here we are realizing that our OLINE sucks, JJ can't just do what he wants, Cushing talks more than he walks, Arian is as injury prone as ever (no one touched him) and can't be relied on, and game managers don't last in this NFL...
So I'm pushing for us to get back to the original plan...

I think BOB is blinded a lot by New England. Tom Brady fixes a lot of problems on offense, and makes things easier for the defense as well. I think BOB thinks we can get by with an OL thats not great, subbing WR and RBs each week, and everything will be ok with the right game manager......only problem is that we don't have Brady.

The biggest problem with that is Hoyer has never been anything close to a game manager. He is neither accurate nor safe with the ball. He is at his best when throwing the ball down field and making the 55% that he completes count. He is like Ryan Fitzpatrick with less arm and less mobility.

What concerns me is that this is four games already this season where we not only lost but looked like a high school team in the process. Three games now (KC, ATL, MIA) where we were literally blown out in the first half and one game (IND) where we lost to a 40-year-old QB who was under the weather while committing nearly every stupid mistake a team could make.
THAT, friends, is a lack of preparation and THAT goes on the coaches - 1000%. If 2/3rds of your games are EMBARRASSING losses, not just losses, THAT goes on the coaches - 1000%.
Romeo and the entire defensive staff should be fired and if O'Brien won't do it, fire him too.
That's not to exonerate the front office or the offense but you have to start somewhere.
Should've kept Wade as DC.
Games likely would have been more fun to watch even with an inept O.

We know McNair won't fire O'Briene because he's got a 5 year contract plus what it cost the owner to buy out his Penn State contract.
Now they might fire Romeo. There is some talent on the defense, but very little on offense and of course with no hope in sight at QB, the offense has got a long, long ways to go.

Yep, but at this point I'm not really sure what changes would be a positive for this season. About the only one that comes to mind would be to give Vrabel a shot at DC. Play calling on O may change, but not sure if it would be publicized, so we would't know. There's few difference makers on the street, so the core group isn't changing.

If Mallett is still on the team after tomorrow it will tell me all I need to know about OB, Smith and McNut - especially OB. I will lose a large amount of respect and patience with OB if he does nothing with Mallett. I don't give a flying flip at this point who the starting QB is or which schlep they sign off the street as the backup. Go sign Ponder, Tebow, or hell, Vinny Testeverde for all I care, but the first message OB needs to send to this wussy-fied team is, we may suck, but we won't tolerate some dumbass malcontent.

There are so many holes on this team. On offense, we are in dire need of a Qb, 2 Rbs, an explosive Wr, 2 to 3 TEs, and probably 3 OL. On defense, we are in need of a Nt, De, and DL depth, 2 ILBs, 2 OLBs(1 for depth), 2 Safties, and at least another corner. So, if we can land a super haul next year of 20 draft picks, and hit on each one, we are right back in the middle of the super bowl race.

There are obviously no quick fixes to a decade's worth of mostly poor personnel decisions, but there is one thing the Texans can do defensively to save themselves at least a TD per game... and that is for the front seven to read and react to the screen plays.
Crennel has given Watt some leeway to freelance out there, and this worked very well in 2014 when Watt should have been MVP of the league. This year, however, offenses have figured out that the Texans defense only cares about pursuit which leaves them very vulnerable to players getting the football out in space, ESPECIALLY when the LBs and safeties are slow and severely lacking NFL-caliber talent.
Take advantage of the speed Watt and Clowney (and, ahem, you too Mercilus) to remove the screen game from opposing offenses, and this D likely goes back to looking like a bend-but-don't-break defense loaded with first rounders.
sinnister
10-26-2015, 06:51 PM
Another thing would be to tighten the coverage. Give Watt and Clowney a chance to make a play and eliminate all the quick throws. Also, always rush at least 5 players. Mercilus isn't much use, so at least let him use his speed to get after the qb, and maybe get a few cleanup sacks. I would line Clowney on Watts side, Mercilus on the other, and do a lot of praying. Maybe hire a full time chaplain.
Pertinent to earlier discussion, article from Jason LaCanfora....
Inside Football: Time for heads to roll in Houston, but not Bill O'Brien's (http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/writer/jason-la-canfora/25353636/inside-football-time-for-heads-to-roll-in-houston-but-not-bill-obriens)
Status quo won't cut it for the Houston Texans. Something has to give.
This team has been pounded into submission far too frequently. It has reached epidemic proportions on both sides of the ball.
Sunday's dumpster fire of a loss to the Dolphins -- punctuated by Arian Foster tearing his Achilles -- was just the latest embarrassment in a season full of them. Where to start? From Ryan Mallett sleeping through his workday after losing his starting job to the quick hook for Brian Hoyer not even three-full quarters into Week 1, to the bizarre in-game quarterback shuffling, to Mallett missing the team charter to Miami, to the defense that can neither pressure nor cover nor tackle, to the offense that can do nothing consistently other then throw balls up for grabs for DeAndre Hopkins, nothing has gone right in Houston.
This franchise is broken right now. And I can't imagine change is not on the horizon. Some smaller changes now, perhaps, and certainly greater ones yet after the season.
This was a mini-playoff game at Miami, a chance for Houston to salvage a horrible start to the season by finding a way to get to 3-4. What the Texans conspired to do instead can not really be quantified as football.
It was horrific, really. Like if Alabama played a mediocre high school team. Miami -- a middling outfit at best -- led 41-0 at the half and racked up like 450 yards in the process. The Dolphins had a yardage advantage of 275-4 at one point. Miami -- ridiculed for the past three years or so for having zero big-play pop in its offense -- was ripping off 50-yard chunk plays at will.
This was a collective failure of spirit, discipline, effort, pride, the degree of which is rarely seen in the NFL. This was one team playing its guts out and the other gassing up the bus to the plane. Hopefully someone managed to escort Mallett from the locker room on to the right flight and all, although cutting him in South Beach may have actually be more apropos.
Drastic changes this soon in the season rarely elicit much response, though these same Dolphins would offer a contrarian view on that at this point. And Bill O'Brien, as much as he's made a meal of this season, isn't going anywhere. He's the most influential figure in this organization and he's got a ton of money still due to him.

Saw one play yesterday where Clowney sniffed out a WR screen. Unfortunately the other 10+ worked like a charm, but that 1 was a pretty good play.
A "local" outlook:
Houston Texans Are Failing At All Levels of the Organization (http://www.scout.com/nfl/texans/story/1603334-texans-are-not-good-fit-houston)
Patrick Starr
Fire Rick Smith?
Fire Romeo Crennel?
Fire Bill O達rien?
At this point the Houston Texans are bad for the city of Houston and, for the second time in seven weeks, they were outclassed on the field. Looking at those two games, they were completely manhandled by the Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins. The Texans put up a big zero while being outscored 69-0 combined in the first halves of those games.
The bigger concern is how things have spiraled downward for the Texans on the field. Missed tackles, zero production from he offense (when it counts), and a team that sometimes appears disinterested are the red flags that continue to get bigger week to week.
The Texans beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers due to a kicker missing multiple field goals and beat a Jacksonville Jaguars team who could possibly be worse than the Texans. No film review will help the Texans correct this; the only thing that will help change what is going on is someone being made an example of, but "who?" is the real question.
At this point it doesn稚 matter who because the structure of the Texans is the issue. Rick Smith is required to find the players who Bill O達rien wants to on his team. The 53-man roster is constructed by O達rien with input from his coaches. If the Texans should have moved on from Smith, the time to do so was when the Gary Kubiak regime was scrapped. It wasn稚 done then and now Smith is attached to the O達rien era more than ever.
O達rien chose to attach himself to Brian Hoyer when free agency started, then decided to keep the quarterback competition a day to day question mark all the way through the 3rd week of the preseason. Then, after deciding Hoyer was the guy, O'Brien pulled the plug on him three quarters later in week one, switching to Ryan Mallett. Mallett's awful last three starts along with today's missing of the team flight to Miami more than likely have left him positioned with no way out of the O達rien doghouse.
The reality is that until the structure of the Texans changes, it will not improve. Let the coaches coach and have a general manager help construct the team and ultimately have the final say in personnel. O達rien has complete control of the 53-man roster and these are his guys on his roster but the production is not there. The Texans continue to be out-coached and outclassed between the white lines.

Sorta agree. If OB was in the heat of the moment and. Rick talked him off the ledge, I'd be ok with it. You can't go into a game with your punter as the QB2.
The real tell will be if Mallett survives today. If he does, Rick wins. If he doesn't, they compromised for the sake of the team on game day.
Regardless, it's never good when stuff like this is leaked to the media. We shouldn't even know about it. Drama is always bad, but especially bad for a struggling squad.

I haven't read the article because I refuse to register at chron.com just to get "insider" access to read some hack sports article. But yes, timing is key here. If this went down before the Miami game, then I can understand Smith overruling OB and hopefully it gets corrected today. But if it went down after the game, then they might as well fire OB because, IMO, it totally undermines his authority in the locker room. How I see this playing out is, if Mallett remains on the roster, I can see a scenario where OB flags him as Inactive from here on and brings up Dysert (or signs someone else) at the expense of a currently rostered player. And that's unfortunate because it impacts OB's authority as well as another player who doesn't deserve to get cut just because the idiot, inept GM wants to make a power play for a useless player.

FWIW, Mallett is not on a 1-year contract. Cutting Mallett now, if I read the cap details right, takes his 2-yr deal and puts it against this year's cap but then there's nothing against next year's cap, saving $3.5 million in 2016. $1.75 million of the contract is guaranteed which is all 2015 money.
Frankly, cutting Mallett does not fix the problem nor does it send the right message. it's not going to light a fire under these players. I suspect O'Brien has overused his profanity-laced tirades and the players have begun tuning it out.
