Year 2 of the BOB Texans kicks off with a home date against the 49ers.
Win or lose, just stay healthy.
Here's a roster (http://www.planetcasemod.com/Roster2015.html) sorted by jersey number. Prints out on two pages. I find it handy for a quick lookup....
Game will be on ABC channel 13 @ 7pm in the Houston area. The "Texan Extra Points" show that comes on @ 6:30 pm (same channel) beforehand is usually a good watch.
No telling how the 49'ers will play - big changes with that team - the arrow is pointing down......
Texans really looked bad in their pre-season opener last year losing 32-0 to the Arizona Cardinals.
For the degenerates, the Texans are favored by 2.5....
I look forward to overreacting to this game.

That did not suck.
Texans take an 8-0 lead on 58-yard catch and run to Shorts. Quick fastball pass to Hopkins is good for the two points...
Lookin' good so far...

Hoyer looked pretty good. But I guess I still want Mallet to win the job. He just has the higher ceiling.

What, seven plays at point blank range? I understand that they're not using their playbook but that is crazy.
Ungood, even if it's not the 1st team OLine.
Oy, with Mallet in, the Texans have about 23 chances to punch it in from the 1 yard line and get stonewalled.... Substitutions already happening.... Score remains 8-0, 49'ers ball at their 1 yard line.
Now, end of the 1st quarter.

And eight. It was the starting interior line. Total garbage. Eight plays to gain two yards. I'm glad I won't be in the OL meeting tomorrow.
49ers go the length of the field on a 99-yard drive and get six.
Score = Texans 8, 49ers 7
12:46 left in the half.
With 3:54 remaining in the half, 49ers kick a 37-yard FG.
49ers 10, Texans 8

We have a lot of rookie OLINEMAN out there.

Good thing he made that tackle because Finau was definitely a major reason for that long run earlier that set up the 49er TD....
Halftime score remains:
49ers 10, Texans 8
Chandler Worthy might be earning a spot on special teams....
Texans hold the Niners to a 3-and-out on the opening possession of the 2nd half. Texans ball with 12:53 left in the 3rd quarter.
Savage to Strong for the 10-yard TD!
Texans 15, Niners 10
9:47 left in the 3rd.
Ankrah with the Safety. Good job despite it being in the Niners 3rd string QB.
Texans 17, Niners 10

I'm very sorry to say this but I would like to see Savage with the ones.
Bullock adds a 41-yard FG.
Texans 20, Niners 10
8:51 left in the game.
Bullock adds another 41-yarder.
Texans 23, Niners 10
58 seconds left in the game.
Texans kneeling it out.
Final score:
Texans 23, Niners 10
All three Texan QB's with a rating of 100+....

Teapot did tell us he had some pretty eff'in good eff'in quarterbacks...
OL depth is an issue, and the team sure missed the nose for the goalline that Arian Foster possesses. Kevin Johnson will be a good CB, and it's not like he had a poor game, but he's definitely a rookie. McKinney is lost in coverage. Hopefully RAC subs him out when the games count. After Hop, the WRs aren't dazzlers, but there's depth there. I hope I see something I like more from Rahim Moore.
Was a little concerned about Mallett's health after the late hit and after he didn't immediately return to the sideline in the 3rd quarter. Mike Mohammed was slow getting up after making a solid play... just want these guys avoiding injury.
Complaining about Preseason Week 1 playcalling is a waste of life, but the QB keeper when you need 4 yards is a headscratcher. BOB must be playing mind games with Andy Reid already.

The QB sneak was weird. If you sneak on 3rd and 4 part of the reason is because you are going for it if you get half the yards. Then they punt on 4th and a foot at midfield.
Blue has great versatility (runs it, catches it, blocks ok, plays ST). His versatility does not include short yardage. He was bad there last year and is still bad.
Getting into the stadium was brutal. I was less than a mile away at 6:20 and I sat down past 7:30. And the NFL wonders why people want to watch on TV instead of going to the games? If the tickets weren't free I would have been very upset.

The worst games for getting in the stadium every season are the preseason games. Always. Season ticket holders ditch their tickets to fans who aren't as familiar with how to get into the stadium. As I sat on 610 exiting Kirby, I saw cars all around me trying to take the same exit that had no business exiting Kirby. I always assume fans would get there earlier on Saturdays for tailgating reducing the amount of traffic an hour before kickoff, but I guess not. Maybe too hot to tailgate in mid-August?
Might be a little premature, but I saw enough good things from Savage to say he can (at least) be the future #2. For example, one of Hoyer/Mallett can be dropped next year and the Texan can go back to carrying just two QB's with maybe a project on the PS. Just keep the Hoyer/Mallett "survivor" of 2015 plus Savage for next year....
Mallett wasn't able to get on the scoreboard but 10/11 passing makes for a good argument against his "inconsistencies". The 7 runs on the goalline with no success was a bit of a headscratcher.... I dunno, maybe after about the 5th attempt, fake the run and throw a short pass next time?
A lot of very good prospects among the new guys but many are going to be cut because there just isn't any room for them....

1. The running backs had a solid night and Alfred Blue took another step in his development. One thing that bears watching is when the Texans run outside zone. Arian Foster is so good at making that “cut up” run behind the center when he feels the defense’s fast flow is, well, too fast. He’ll let the play develop then BOOM dart back behind center-guard blocks for significant gains. For the OL, zoning off every single DL to give the RB a downhill edge is nearly impossible. So, Blue and company are going to need to be a bit more cognizant of those cut up seams to not let fast flowing defenders win. Rookie Kenny Hilliard had one of those cut up runs later in the game and it produced a 13 yard gain.
2. Cecil Shorts III was the recipient of Hoyer’s touchdown throw but Garrett Graham’s sliding catch on third down on Brian Hoyer’s only drive of the night was the key to the whole drive. Graham’s had a tremendous camp and it followed right in line with what I’ve seen all camp - no one can cover him. As such, seeing the tight ends do something of value early was a great sign.
3. Throughout the week, people asked me “tonight’s a success if...?” I said quality long drives by each QB, tight ends getting involved early and no significant injuries. That was pretty close to happening, I suppose.
4. On the first offensive drive, guard Jeff Adams made a key block on the inside power/gap run by Alfred Blue. Adams wrapped around, as an uncovered lineman, eyed a fast filling linebacker and sealed him off. Blue burst right off Adams’ block into the secondary for a solid 14 yard gain.
5. Hoyer’s touchdown pass to Shorts was textbook execution on third down. Protection was fantastic. Hoyer stood tall in the pocket. Shorts was quick into his route and even faster after he had the ball in his hands.
6. On the two point play after the touchdown, Andre Ware immediately pointed out the press man by the 49ers during our radio broadcast. We talked about it during the break afterward - the cornerback can’t win against Hopkins in that situation. If the corner plays for the fade, the QB throws to Hop’s back shoulder. If the corner attempts to prevent the backshoulder throw, the QB throws for the back pylon, where Hopkins can catch the highball fade. Shareece Wright actually played it as well as he could. And lost.
7. Tom Savage used that same methodology on his touchdown throw to Jaelen Strong in the 2nd half. When Strong has a defensive back on his back, it’s over.
8. The secondary didn’t tackle well in the first half and although it’s a bit disappointing, it’s not that surprising. Those guys rarely get the opportunity to make many tackles in practice, but it’s got to improve moving forward in preparation for running back Jamaal Charles on September 13th.
9. On his last play of the night, ILB Brian Cushing blitzed the middle on third and seven and completely took out two 49er OL. He just knocked them completely out of the way which opened the gate for rookie DT Christian Covington to force QB Colin Kaepernick out of the pocket. Kaep had to throw it away. Cushing is going to be key for this defense and to see him play with the fire and explosiveness we remember is such a good sign.
10. Speaking of Covington, the guy is going to find a way on the field to rush the passer. He’s so much quicker than any other interior lineman the Texans have, not counting JJ Watt, of course. But, he’s relentless and extremely difficult for pass blocking linemen to handle. When he got free on that pass rush, he exploded into Kaep’s face and forced the QB to flee. He was a monster for the Redskins to block and flashed early in the game versus the 49ers on that pass rush.
11. James “Brick” Ferentz may not look like an NFL lineman, but don’t tell him that. There’s no more feisty player on this roster. I think there were two, maybe three times when I saw him engaged in less than polite discussion with a 49er defender.
12. Ryan Mallett threw one incompletion and most importantly threw the ball in the short to intermediate areas of the field as well as we’ve seen. That’s been the so-called knock on him throughout his career - big arm, accuracy in the intermediate areas can go awry. Not last night. He got in rhythm early with his first throw to C.J. Fiedorowicz and it continued.
