Top of the board seems to set up with some nice trade up options. Gregory fell out of the first round, as did the safety Collins, some decent WRs like Strong & DGB, LB Harold, plus TE Maxx Williams.

OK so who was the target at 32? The rumor was we wanted to trade back into the 1st round and grab NE pick at 32, who was the target and is he still there?

Was it Gregory? Was it Dorsett? Was it Brown?

Is the guy still on the board and do they try to get move up tonight to 33-35 range?

The news broke when the Colts were on the clock IIRC.

If we wait until 51 my targets are now a)Chris Conley, WR, Georgia, b) Devin Funchess, WR/TE, Michigan, c) Jaquiski Tartt, S, Samford.

610 sports radio with Mike Melster & Seth Payne (former Texans NT), say it was the guy that Indy took with their first round pick. Thy say the trade was predicated on Dorsett being on the board when the Pats were picking, but of course he wasn't so the deal was set aside. So FWIW, that's what the 610 crew is claiming.

Probably just as well that the Texans didn't make that trade. They would have had to give up too much to move up that high - likely a 2nd and 3rd or a 2nd and next year's 2nd.

Keith

The rumor is the Texans twice tried to trade back into the first round. First time they were after Bud Dupree, then the second time was for Dorsett.

If so, then it makes me wonder how much the team is interested in guys like Gregory, Strong, and DGB. There's just so many good options to start the 2nd round, I hope they don't get too antsy. Trading up for Dorsett is not something I would have been thrilled with, and I am sure the price to move up for Dupree was cost prohibitive.

But if you hit on someone in the 1st, you have that 5th year option. That could be a fairly substantial money/cap saver.

picks 51 and 82 coming up tonight if no trades.

if possible rumored trades were for OLB and WR, then perhaps those are positions we might target today.

just depends on many things, how the draft will flow.

And I like the CB we picked in the first round. Does make sense in a passing league and our division.

I would have been very excited with getting Dorsett. I liked the young man immensely. Take the top off defense type speed, a true slot guy, and great hands.

I don't understand the Colts not going OL or front 7 in defense. When is Dorsett going to play for them?

WMH

Latest rumor is shopping JJo for draft picks.

Likely BS, as it really doesn't make much sense to do so. At this point of the off-season, need the player more than the cap room.

Being a Colts fan, I am shocked that they didn't take Malcolm Brown or Jake Fisher, or even Eli Harold or Preston Smith. But, it will be hard for anyone to match up with the weapons, so Defenses will have to get some pass rush against a porous OLine.

Would love to see them move up and get DGB. Not their type of guy with the red flags and probably wont happen, but if you're going to move up, get a guy who could be all-pro if he gets his head on straight. I'd rather we move up and get him over seeing him go to Possum Holler.

I feel you. That's why I have been advocating for the likes of Ben Heeney, Jake Ryan, and Bryce Hager. He is a guy who could be an OLB on 3rd down and he's versatile enough to play 3 downs....not to be used in Coverage.

I like him, but agree with you. He's another Brian Cushing. Now, Cushing wasn't himself last season, so we need that. However, we really need a Nickle-Linebacker who can cover the TE and make the Offense not want to check to a run play.

Late to the party, but my two cents:

McKinney: They've been looking for another ILB on the cheap since DeMeco Ryans got hurt -- Sharpton was a 4th rounder, got Dent for TJ Yates, who they were going to cut anyway. Most likely a role player at first (even if he starts, since he will probably be coming out in nickel and dime situations) and insurance for Cushing.

Strong: If they'd taken him in the 1st most wouldn't have considered it a reach, or at least not a major one. Now the biggest WR on the team.

I'm glad they got something for Posey since they seemed to have no real interest in playing him.

We got two guys I really wanted but a little odd the way they acquired them.

If they weren't going to play Posey, then making him part of the deal to get Strong was a good ploy. I promise any doubters you will LIKE what Jaelen Strong is going to give this team. He goes up and gets the jump balls and he's got very good speed. The big issue for him is being able to get off the line in press coverage but that can be coached.

The CBS comparison was to Marques Colston of the Saints. I'd take that sort of career from him but I think he can be better. Of course, it would help if he had someone as accurate as Drew Brees in camp.

In many of my mocks, I would trade my 4th, 5th and 6th to get an extra 3rd. We somehow got rid of our 4th, 5th and 6th but just to get the guys we wanted.

If I had mocked Strong, McKinney and K. Johnson, I'd feel pretty good about it. The odd thing is it happened in reverse order but we got a better corner that way. Now we just have comp picks (one 5th, two 6ths) and a 7th unless we deal away any other players or future picks.

He always looked out of place to me, playing inside linebacker with an outside linebacker build. With 33” inch arms on a 6’4”, 246 lb. frame, he seemed more of a fit as a 3-4 OLB or even a 4-3 OLB. But, he played inside for three years because that’s what Mississippi State asked him to do. Later in his career, in pass rush situations, he did rush from the edge and that versatility opens up a number of different doors going forward if he can do that.

Imagine a guy that can be a three down inside linebacker at two, maybe even three, different spots. That’s utopian for a defensive coordinator and it’s got to be the conversation that teams are having currently. Where do we play this guy? Everywhere. But, does he have the toolbox to line up all over the defense? Some team is convincing themselves that he does, some are talking themselves out of it. Let’s take a look at the full package.
