Only been waiting 54-ish weeks to start and sticky this thread...

Latest word is that the Texans aren't getting teams to bite on a trade down and are now expected to keep the #1 pick, selecting either Clowney or Mack. Also, should they trade down, Johnny Manziel is not being considered.

Let the good times roll... :D

Got to admit, "who gets Johnny Football?" is the most intriguing sub-story to me...;)

A source tells me Ryan Mallett to the Texans may soon be done.

Admittedly, you have to take any of the swirling rumors with a grain of salt, but it's being reported that Jacksonville is considering moving up for Clowney. If they are, it wouldn't take much for me to pull the trigger on that deal. I would seriously consider that even if all we got was the Jags' 2nd rounder.

Second source says nothing doing at the moment on Mallett to Houston. We'll watch how it plays out. Makes sense if Clowney is No. 1.

Mallett is at the end of his rookie deal, so best case scenario is we get lucky and he plays great, and we have to pay $10+ million for a QB. At least if you get lucky on a rookie you get 3-4 years of cheap labor.

If he can be had for a 3rd (or better yet an extra 3rd we get in a trade down), and BOB likes him, then I guess I'm on board. But besides cashing checks signed by Robert Kraft, there is nothing to recommend him from a dozen other young NFL backups.

The fact that a team whose starter will be 37 when the season starts and has shown signs of being in decline (not sharp decline, but decline) would be willing to deal Mallett isn't exactly a ringing endorsement.

I'm hoping we can trade down and take Greg Robinson. Since nobody is talking about the Texan drafting him....it makes sense. :D

Roy P

And we go with Clowney....hope he plays to his potential

Roy P

My top QB is now a Divisional Foe. And then the Browns are the first team to be able to pull off a trade...with Buffalo (the team I kept making trades with in the Mock Simulator)...do they go Watkins or something crazy like Ha Ha Clinton-Dix?

barrett

I am now a Clowney fan I guess.

When I watched Bortles play actual football games I thought he was mediocre and didn't even stand out in the American Conference. The UH defense that gave up 70 to BYU made him look terrible.

And it looks like Cleveland has the touch these last 6 months. Now to see if they can make use of the pile of picks they have hoarded.

Mack goes to the Raiders..... Nice pick, he'll certainly make them better...

Roy P

Do the Falcons take Lewan or Matthews?

Roy P
05-08-2014, 08:02 PM
Cleveland trade back to 9 then up to 8 with the Vikings.....Johnny Football anyone?

Nope....Justin Gilbert. I love this pick! The Browns are working the draft board just like in the movie Draft Day. :)

Minnesota is at 9 and the top players on my board are Anthony Barr and Taylor Lewan...maybe Eric Ebron

Love that they went with Anthony Barr..

My #10 Guy Eric Ebron goes #10 to the Lions. Matthew Stafford is going to be very happy.

The Titans take Lewan at #11 and my top 10 Guys are now drafted. As for where the rest of My guys go, is anyone's guess. I would have been happy with a trade down all the way to #11 if could have garnered more picks along the way. Let's see what Rick Smith and O'Brien have in store.

Who might go QB? Rams, Browns, Cowboys(?), Cardinals? I can't see the Patriots taking one at 29 but who the hell knows what those guys are ever thinking.

Roy P
05-08-2014, 08:44 PM
I think Cleveland may go Derek Carr @ 26....Johnny Football, who knows?

chuck
05-08-2014, 08:47 PM
There's a very reasonable chance Bridgewater will be there at 33. Hell, Or Manziel. I'd be happy to see the team draft Bridgewater at 33 but there should be enough talent sitting there to where Rick will be fielding some phone calls tonight and tomorrow.

Can't believe Jerruh didn't take Manziel. Might be bunches of decent QB's available at #33.....Garoppolo, Teddy, Manziel (?)...

DE Kony Ealy

I hope we could trade #33 and still get Garoppolo

Someone's bound to want to trade up to nab a QB before pick #33. Unless the Texans want Mallett, QB must be a strong consideration with their next pick.

I'm happy that we are 19 picks in and Manziel, Bridgewater, and Carr are still on the board...hoping the 'experts' are right and they come off before Top Jimmy and he falls into our laps.

I like Bridgewater for us at 33 but if BOB likes another QB then I like him, too.

I forgot about Cincinnati. I think they could go QB in the first too potentially. But I think Cleveland at 26 is nearly a lock. The Eagles at 22 are a dark horse, too.

OR the Browns at 22. Here we go.

Time for the Pats to take Amaro although Blitzwood had a good idea with Timmy Jernigan.

DT Easley of Florida. Major risk if his knee is not sound.

Somebody good will still be there at 33. They may take an OL if they aren't thrilled with the QBs left.

I love it how Manziel sat around for three hours and then gets taken by Cleveland. His bust factor just rose 20%.

Damn. So close to Bridgewater.

Well, I'm staunchly in favor of getting a RT now. Antonio Richardson or Joel Bitonio or Cyrus Kuondijo. Trade back if it makes sense but make sure you get a quality lineman.

I sort of doubt BOB likes Teddy as much as you and I do. RT, TE, ILB, hell, OLB, CB, RB, chucha madre we need a lot of players. Anyway, I would love a trade down because the second and third rounds are where the value seems to be in this draft and since we need so much if we can drop back a couple of picks and add another second or third, let's do it. Although I think the Seahawks and the Niners are the only two teams with two seconds.

I think Carr is better than anyone else at QB and since there's no way the Texans can take him I think that they'll be able to get someone at 101 who may be as good as anyone they could get at 33.

No way they take Carr. If they really like Savage, I say take him and don't screw around with a trade down. I could the Raiders being willing to move up for Carr, tho. But again, if they like Savage, grab him.

As for Mallett, ugh, I'd rather take a shot with Ponder.

As for Mallett I'm with everyone who is suspicious of taking any quarterback that Belichick willingly parts with.

Sonofabitch. So damn close to Teddy. Obviously, I must have liked him in this offense more than the Texans. For all I know, he'll bust with the Vikings, but I think he would have been a terrific fit here.

Not only that (Cassel), but consider too that Mallett has been groomed in their offense for a couple seasons, and Tom Brady at 37 isn't going to be around forever. So... letting him walk in a contract year for a 3rd? Hm.

Compared with the QB options remaining in the draft, I can't say though that Mallett would be that much worse in 2014 than anyone on the board. He'd be a vet, and he'd know the offense.

I'll say this... the Texans were successful in avoiding a repeat of the 2002 draft, a year in which Peppers should have been the pick but the team forced David Carr up their board. Clowney ought to be a playmaker in what should hopefully be decent defense this season.

It looks to "potentially" be a stellar defense "on paper". Clowney, JJ, Cushing, Mercilus, Jonathon J., and Kareem are all first rounders. But that's on paper,
and it's gonna be challenging to fit all of those pieces together. And it's hard to see all of those guys on the field with either Cushing or Mercilus or both on the bench in some nickel/dime packages and that's not wise to have that first-round cap sitting on the bench.

Basically my thoughts. I think Bridgewater will be a starting NFL QB, but surprised he dropped as low as he did.

We'll see how this goes. On paper, the defense looks good but there is no reason to be hopeful that we will get anything more than average QB play at best. So, even with a good D, I don't see this team doing much next year. And probably before we do get some decent QB play, several of these guys will be gone because we can't afford to keep them all. Feels like we're simply retracing Kubiak's footsteps. Wish I could be optimistic but I'm not.

I'm taking optimistic approach for now, give the new coaches and players atleast 8 real games.

Salary cap has started to go up with new TV deals so hopefully can start to keep more of their own.

Some of the younger guys will start to be getting 3 years experience this year, including wide receivers and OL.

Still 10 more guys to draft and then more UDFA and FA and training camp and preseason and see where we are when games start in September.

if defense is really good, mostly pretty young, getting close to overall very good team then.

For sure this coaching staff has a way different approach and thinking from previous regime, from what see so far.
