Whelp, it appears Smith's antics might cost him a game or two + a fine. Didn't see this on TV, but Glazer found it on 22 film. Not good, but at least its likely just SD & TN. Hope its not more than that.......

The radio said they thought it was going to be the next two preseason games only. Guess we will know for sure soon.

He threw the helmet at that idiot's chest. It bounced off his ample breasts. Who cares? Fine the dude $50k and let's get back to work.

Can't play in the remaining exhibition games, let's hope that's the extent of the suspension. Actually I kinda wish they'd suspend the entire starting lineup, both defense & offense, for the last 2 preseason games and keep them off of the field until the games start to mean something in SD. Just too many injuries in these
meaningless exhibition games.

The NFL is considering whether to suspend Houston Texans defensive end Antonio Smith from one or more regular-season games for forcibly removing the helmet of Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Richie Incognito and then dangerously swinging it at his face, according to a league source.

I don't like the sounds of this, could be we won't get off so easy on this afterall ?

I would imagine that using a helmet as a weapon is frowned upon by Mrs. Goddell.

Schefter is reporting that the suspension will be the last 2 preseason games + the SD game.

I'm OK with that.

Missing the opener really sucks. This isn't Smith's first issue with Incognito, but he really should take the higher ground with that guy.

San Diego's pass pro should be swiss cheese enough to get to Rivers without Smith, but I was kinda looking forward to getting them on Monday Night with a full front 7. David Carr still has nightmares I'm sure from his first game against the Chargers in 2002 when he was their punching bag, so getting a little payback is always nice.

What the hell is Antonio, a 19-year old college kid or something ?
How does a 32 year old NFL veteran lose his cool like this in a totally meaningless preseason game ? Missing the SD game is gonna cost him a lot of money, and he's also really hurt his own team with the suspension.

I want to know how the officials could be so incompetent.

You have two guys who are known to hate each other. They tried to injure/kick each other last year and you missed all of it live. The league had to clean up with fines. You would figure this is the kind of thing that an official's preparation should prepare them for going into the game.

Then instead of keeping an eye on these two, they totally miss one guy hanging on the other guy's facemask, and the 2nd guy retaliating by ripping his helmet off and hitting him with it. And the officials don't see any of this?

Fine/suspend the stupid players involved if you think they deserve it, but if player safety matters than you should be fining/suspending the officials who missed it all and caused it to escalate through their incompetence.

To no surprise, Antonio Smith will appeal his three-game suspension (two preseason games, one regular season game)I sure hope he doesn't muck this up and delay the process to where his suspension drags further into the regular season. Dude, suck it up and take your punishment! You're not going win an appeal. Be happy it's just one regular season game against a very beatable team.

The Chargers are relying on a pair of offensive tackles who resemble metro buses. We ought to be able to get some outside rush with guys like Mercilus and Jefferson. Just dial it up and the interior DL won't matter.

I do wish they would talk more about Incognito instigating the situation with hands and punches to Smiths head. But Smith needs to stay cool, easy to say, hard to do in the situation.

As expected, his appeal was denied.

Going to cost Smith ~$380K for being an idiot.

Ouch for him, and sucks for us.

But I'm sure we'll manage.

After reading this...

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/9926139/richie-incognito-miami-dolphins-used-slurs-messages-jonathan-martin

Antonio Smith should get a refund of his fine and a commendation from the league for hitting that guy with his helmet. I disliked him when I thought he was a dirty player, turns out that may be his good side. How does a locker room put up with a guy like that? How is it only when a guy freaks out that anyone notices? How did multiple teammates come to his defense when he was first accused yesterday before the transcript was released?

I hope this guy disappears from football permanently.

barrett

And I guess because Incognito is an idiot he didn't realize Martin might be smart enough to save the text messages and voice mails.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/9921634/jonathan-martin-miami-dolphins-not-filed-formal-complaint-due-fear-retribution-teammates

So Incognito leaves over top threatening, racist voice mails, and then goes on the offensive and claims he's being slandered, and never considers that the messages might surface? How stupid is this guy?

I guess the Dolphins and Incognito are both pretty uneducated about harrassment laws these days.

Coach Philbin and others should have stopped this months ago.

Even players who observed and knew should have stopped it.

Seriously. What kind of human (not man/football player/locker room leader/etc...simpy human) sits and watches some turd like Incognito use a combination of despicable racism and threats to get cash and special treatment from rookie players? There is no way he is the type of guy who leaves messages like that and the rest of the locker room doesn't realize it. And yet they all sit and watch? And I am guessing more than a few joined in. They even named Ingognito to their 6 player veteran leadership council this year. Many publicly supported him as a great guy when the accusations were still accusations a few days ago. That must be a great place to work.
