NFL Films president Steve Sabol dead at 69

NFL Films president Steve Sabol, who came to NFL Films as the boss’ son but became one of the true visionaries of sports film-making, has died at 69 after an 18-month battle with brain cancer.

“Steve Sabol was the creative genius behind the remarkable work of NFL Films,” said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. “Steve’s passion for football was matched by his incredible talent and energy. Steve’s legacy will be part of the NFL forever. He was a major contributor to the success of the NFL, a man who changed the way we look at football and sports, and a great friend.”

We’ll have more on Steve, who truly was one of the most memorable figures in the history of sports media, later in the day.

He always looked like he really enjoyed his job. But, then, wouldn't you?

The only downside I can see is writing the annual 23-minute highlight video for some truly suckass teams and trying not to sound too snarky about it.

"The 2011 Denver Broncos: What the $%#^ Were They Thinking?"

Too bad for his family. I hope NFL Films doesn't go to seed or, worse, become totally controlled by the NFL to the point that it edits itself away from any intelligent thought.
