just saw that on chron.com as well. this is excellent news. if they can get barwin done before the season as well that will reduce the offseason worries tremendously.

One down and one to go. ( Two guys that are being talked about as being talked to for an extension). This is very good news. We did not want Brown going out to the open market.
Now lets see if they can get Barwin done.
I'll be curious to see the money associated with this. If there is any substantial "new" money for this year, I'm not sure how Barwin can happen until after the season (unless of course he has no new money this year).
Last I recall, we only had $3.3MMish of cap room left.

Duane Brown signed 6-year $53.4 million extension. $22.08 guananteed. $8.9 million average. -- John McClain (@McClain_on_NFL)
Brown's new deal starts in 2013 and runs through 2018. He makes $2.08 million this season. -- John McClain (@McClain_on_NFL)
Answered my own question - '12 cap is not an issue with Browns deal. Kudos to Rick Smith and that "Cap" guy. That is a very nice deal for a premier LT in today's world. Brown must want to stay as well.

I think the Texans got the best end of that deal. I mean they are getting Brown for less that half, 'bout 45 % the guaranteed money that Mario got from Buffalo. I mean maybe that's kinda apples and oranges, but I think Brown is more valuable to the Texans than Mario was.

Just in time for him to blow out an ACL. :(

Thanks to Duane and his agent. All things considered, $22m guaranteed isn't bad , call it set for life type money, and then injuries, that is risk , so works both ways.
Hope they can get Barwin extended as well.
And good job to our GM and cap and negotiating staff.

I have to say, after a couple of learning years for both Rick Smith and Gary Kubiak, both of them have grown into there jobs quit nicely.

Wow, seems like a sweet deal for the Texans. I have to imagine Duane earned an even bigger payday than this, but he must understand that only lesser teams have the kind of cap room to afford what he should be paid.
Signed through 2018... that's pretty awesome. Not a bad year for Duane!

yeah, i am a bit surprised at the numbers as well. he could have almost certainly gotten significantly more than this on the open market. i guess getting the guarenteed money set a year early(in case of injury this season) was somewhat of a factor, but there is no doubt he made the conscious decision to take less to stay here and play for this team and still allow the team to have cap space to work on their other guys.
brown has skyrocketed up my list of favorite texans.
