Another good test for the new defense against the Niner run game.....
Hope we win and hope nobody gets hurt.

Would love to see Tate get most of the work tonight and rest Foster much of the game. We already know what Foster can do and have already seen him perform in top condition. We only risk getting him injured now the more we play him.
Supposedly, J. Joseph will get his first look at corner for us and I will watch with interest how he is doing.
Would love to see plenty of Watt and Reid, particularly in the backfield.
Texans win the toss and will receive.
McManis brings the kick back to the Texan 19.
Haha, Schaub throws an INT on the dump pass and it's returned for a TD... Oh boy.... Brooks with the INT....

Jacoby Jones is not a professional football player. I am tired of his drops and his bad routes and his inability to make a challenging catch. The team is going to waive two, three, four other WRs that catch on with other teams and have decent (or better) careers while they keep Jones.
Dixon brings the kickoff back to the Niner 24 yard line.
----------------------
Dixon for about 3 up the middle.
Pass to Ginn good for 8 and the 1st down.
Dixon for 3. 2nd and 7 coming up.

That's obviously what we're hoping for but the radio guys are talking quite a bit about his dejected body language and so on.
I'm watching the game over the internets and have the SF feed so if any of you watching the KTRK feed have any insight on Foster's condition don't be shy.
A Smith on the sack! Loss of 8. Makes it 3rd and 9.
Pass to Ginn is complete but he's is out of bounds. Niners have to punt.

Foster hopped and went down, slammed his fist, yanked off his helmet and hobbled to the sideline and then to the locker room under his own power. The booth is speculating it's a pulled hammy. I suspect they are getting an MRI to start with.
If true, not a season-ender, but might cost him 2-4 weeks.

It looks like (and it may be a reality) that the Texans are finally good enough to where their mistakes don't immediately doom them against mediocre competition. You can't turn the ball over three times in a half against a real AFC team and expect not to get blown out, but against the 50% of the schedule (or more) that's not elite, maybe they can.
I'd sure like to cut down on the idiotic TOs, though.
Halftime stats:
Passing: Schaub 14/22, 170 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
Rushing: Foster 8/38, Ward 6/28, Tate 3/22
Receiving: OD 5/53, AJ 3/51, KW 3/35, Casey 2/19, Foster 1/12
Tackles: Cody/Barwin 3 each, Manning/Cushing/Watt 2 each
Time of possession: Texans 18:41, Niners 11:19
Turnovers: Texans 3, Niners 2
3rd down efficiency: Texans 4/6, Niners 1/5
Redzone: Texans 2/3, Niners 0/0
Total Yards: Texans 260, Niners 50
Penalties: Texans 4/45, Niners 4/33

The turnovers are ugly, but good god, this looks like the varsity scrimmaging the JV. San Francisco is that bad. Is it possible that a guy as competitive as Harbaugh wants to go 0-16 so he can draft Andrew Luck. Because I honestly cannot imagine an NFL team being less talented.
And our defense looks really good even if it is against the Washington Generals.

I'm a believer in Altuve, Martinez and Paredes. I'm optimistic about Shaefer. If Bogusevic is figuring things out the lineup will not be the cause of their being a last place team again next year.
Niners bring the 2nd half kickoff back to their 22. (Must've been a penalty cause they are starting at their 12)
Hunter for about 12. 1st down.

He's going to play first base again next year and drive in as many runs as the guys in front of him allow. I have no idea why he gets savaged so. It's not his fault Drayton gave him a big contract. His contract wouldn't look that out of place on a decent team like, say, the Cardinals. But on Kansas City South it certainly stands out. He was brought to Houston to drive in runs and that's what he's done. It's not his fault the team blows and the old owner is a moron and the new one wants to dramatically slash the payroll.
Tate for maybe 1.
Leinart's pass to JJ gets 9 and the 1st down.

Pass to Dreessen gets 11.

The funny thing is that the only reason the Astros signed Carlos Lee was because Carlos Beltran didn't stay. The difference is that, in 2011, Beltran still had trade value.
What angers me about the Astros is they trade their productive affordable players because they allegedly need to slash payroll but don't trade their overpriced underproductive players so they keep bitching about cutting payroll while keeping the overpaid sluggards.
When I was growing up, you dumped the bad players and kept the good ones. The Astros have turned that strategy on its head.

Carlos Lee in not tradable. Surely you understand that. You can complain all you like about his contract but to complain that the team does not trade him today is foolish.
And what productive, affordable players have they traded? Pence and Bourn? Pence is not good enough to overpay for and he has one year of arb eligibility if I recall correctly. Bourn is a complete player and it was a shame to lose him but Boras is going to ass rape the team that signs him long term. I would love for the Astros to be a large payroll team that routinely resigns guys like Bourn with agents like Boras. But they're not. The Astros got some intriguing players in return for both of those guys that hopefully will help the club when they get good again in 2018 or so.

I agree, zero is zero. Great defensive effort, especially since we gave them the ball repeatedly.
Leinhart looked better. Actually threw it to non-rbs.
Ward has to be nervous. With our depth and youth at RB a fumble like that could doom him.
Casey was a weapon in the receiving game tonight. And the 3rd hold was all on Tate for bouncing it when Casey had him kicked out. The 2nd was on special teams. That means I live with the other holding call if my FB has to be gameplanned for.
And I can't believe that is the job Jim Harbaugh left college football for. They are talent starved on offense like no team in the NFL.

and while the SF offense is terrible, their 1st string defense had not allowed a point in the preseason. They are not a great defense necessarily, but marching up and down the field and putting up 18 first downs before half time is impressive.

Arky,
You're a hero with these posts. I'm managing my son's baseball team in a tournament this weekend and couldn't break away from his doubleheader yesterday to catch the game live.
So 2 weeks for Foster's hammy to heal? I dunno... I'd like to think Tate and Ward could still pile on yards on the Colts, right?

I love this defense, love watching it. 3-4s are always more entertaining because of the variety of LB combinations used to rush the QB, but they are also more risky for obvious reasons. It will be interesting to see what Wade has in store for opponents in regular season when he takes the wraps off of his blitz packages ?
And the D also seemed to be more effective against the rush ? Didn't check the stats, but San Fran was running a big OLine, probably 30-40 lbs bigger per man up front and still don't think they were that effective in running the ball ?
I thought Leinert was far more impressive than any previous appearance in this preseason ? And how much do we drop off with Tate/Ward in place of Foster, because that hammy could plague him off and on all season long ?
!) Special teams still not up to the other two parts of the team
2) Jacoby Jones still has all the tools needed in his body, but his head is still just not in the game.
3) Kevin Walter cannot get separation enough. He had a decent night tonight, but it is the first time all preseaon.
If we had complementary #2's to go along with AJ, we would have the best offense in the NFL. As it is the oposition will just double and triple AJ again this year.
