It's still preseason and we do play NO during the regular season, so likely to be a fairly routine calls game.
Sounds like the starters will be in longer this game, so we hope everyone stays healthy.
I mainly hope our team continues to compete well in all phases and not look overmatched anywhere. But it is preseason, time for learning and trying everyone out.
A few things seem to be of interest to watch out of last week -
Defense
- how will Mario progress in his position
- will we stop runs up the middle
- can we protect against the long pass
- will Braman and Nadding continue to look good at OLB
Offense
- how will we protect against lots of blitzes
- how will Tate and Arian look at RB, and Ogbonnaya continue to look
- how about Jean and other WR's
ST
- kick returners, will this improve, although likely still backups
- and will kick coverage improve

Pretty good list for things to watch for. However, as you said, we meet the Saints pretty early in the year so I expect both teams to keep it pretty vanilla. Thus, I don't anticipate the Saints sending a lot of blitzes so you may not get a chance to see how we protect against the blitz this week.
I would also add that I'm looking for Schaub to give some indication that he is aware he is playing a football game sometime before midway through the 2nd quarter.

agree on mario, he was blocked way too much on monday by one o-lineman
don't want to see foster in this game at all.
want to see if they can continue to get pressure on the opposing qb
want to see the offense actually come out in sync at the BEGINNING of a game.

I wasn't overly concerned about Mario. He was a non-factor, but it was a very small sampling. Plus they used only 3 step drops while he was in the game. The run plays that worked were up the middle (where we may be in trouble this year unless Cushing looks like 2009).
Basically I saw nothing concerning from Mario, but if he played a whole game like that then we just turned him into a non-impact player. More plays should tell us more. And so should an offense that will drop back and pass.
Sean Payton has ran up 38 pts on the Texans in each of the last two preseason games. Should be a good test for the new defense....

Mario is a DE/DT type not DE/OLB type, so the sooner they get thru this nonsense about him playing at this new position the better. Besides we are very vulnerable up front from rushing plays with our small nose and the very smallish A.Smith ('bout 275) at one DE. Don't be surprised if the Saints with their monster guard duo (Evans & Nicks) maul us pretty bad with the hard-running Ingram up the middle. A Mario-JJ DE pairing would give us a stronger run defense and a better pass rush, especially when you move Mario up front and add another real edge-rusher to pair with Barwin.
Kickoff due in a few minutes...

Sure, Cody and Mitchell can handle the nose, no problem. Mario can play OLB, sure, no problem.
Any team with a competent OC is going to shred this defense.

This looks like a playoff offense.
One thing I am concerned about is the depth of our playbook that we are seeing today, while NO has settled for draws and traps up the middle.
I hope we are not showing all our cards before the regular season game

This has been a pretty enjoyable first half.
Offense is really clicking, running and passing.

Tate is going to add an interesting dynamic to our offense.

If Tate can stay healthy I don't see what the issue is. He has far more upside than does Ward.
I wonder if Smith can spin Slaton into anything or if he'll Aaron Glenn him.

Once again, Special Teams are awful and make the most idiotic plays and take the most idiotic angles. Has anyone (namely, Marciano!) told Keo it's OK to down the ball on kickoffs - especially when you catch it 8yds in the endzone?
Keo brings the 2nd half kickoff back to the Texan 19.
(must've been a penalty on the kickoff)
Leinart dumps to Dreessen for about 9.
Obie (Ogbonnaya) gets the 1 for the 1st down.
Obie for about 3.
Leinart's pass is batted down. Makes it 3rd and 7 at the Texan 27.
3rd down pass is off the mark so Texans have to punt.
Maynard's punt is a little shanky, goes out of bounds at the Saints 38.
Has anyone (namely, Marciano!) told Keo it's OK to down the ball on kickoffs - especially when you catch it 8yds in the endzone?

Taylor picks up 2 up the gut.
Saints rush for 3 more. Makes it 3rd and 4 or 5.

While I would agree with you if this was September, I don't agree in August. Gotta get things on film and try to put a band-aid on it.I realize it's only preseason and some of these guys are not going to be playing, but come on... These guys are downright awful. Almost every time they return or cover a kick it's a negative play. It doesn't seem like the other teams we're playing are having these issues so I don't buy the "we're playing our scrubs" argument. Therer's a history of bad ST play here and it's going to bite them in the arse during the regluar season if they don't start working on it now and get it fixed.
Hartmann's kickoff is brought back to the Saint's 25. Flag on the Saints on the return puts the ball at their own 10.
Daniel can't find an open receiver and throws it away. Makes it 2nd and 10 coming up.
Saints rush left for 2. 3rd and 8 coming up.
Dump pass gets enough for the 1st down at the Texan 21.
Taylor for 2. 2nd and 8 coming up.
Daniel's pass is good for big gainer. Ball at the Saints 43.
Daniel's pass is overthrown and INT'ed by McCain. Flag at the end of the play. Roughness on Demps, 15 yards. Texans ball at their 34.

I don't recall a Texans return beyond the 20, nor do I recall an opponent's return shy of the 20. Marciano obviously has pictures of McNair in bed with a teenage boy or something similar.

Obie for about 7 up the middle but flag on the play. Illegal formation on the Texans. Makes it 3rd and 7 coming up.
Pass to Darling picks up about 9 and the 1st down. Saints are challenging that the receiver may have fumbled while stretching for the 1st down.....

While, clearly, our defense still has a few weak spots I have seen the Texans do some things in these last two games they have never done before: the plethora of sacks in game one and the three turnovers this game.
We seem to be maturing as a defense. I really hope this translates over to the regular season.
Play stands, Saints are charged a timeout. Ball at the Saints 42.
Obie for 3.
Pass to JJ gets about 6. Makes it 3rd and 1.
Obie can't get out of the backfield and loses 2. 4th and 3 coming up. Texans use a timeout and will probably go for it.

Nice to see second team D get two turnovers, fumble and int.
I see a lot of teams running back kickoffs from the endzone this preseason which will likely change in regular season. I guess they just want to practice the blocking schemes.
make that three sack-fumnbles, not bad.
Pass goes off Grahams hands so the Saints takeover on downs. Ball at the Saints 35.

Daniel is pressured and throws it inc. Makes it 3rd and 6.

Cobbs for no gain. Makes it 3rd and 9 coming up. 10:37 left in the game.

Dump to Hill gets about 5.
Obie for about 7 on the right side gets the 1st down.

Obie gets close to the 1st down. 3rd and 1 it is.
Obie sweeps right for nice gainer (10 yards?). 1st down.
Obie for no gain. 6:35 left in the game.
Pass sails inc. Makes it 3rd and 10.
J Williams gets about 7. Makes it 4th and 3 and Texans to punt.
Maynard's punt goes out of bounds at the Saints 9. 5:11 left in the game.

so, its preseason, doesn't mean much. N.O was a two point favorite coming into the game. Texans won 27-14.
in 2010 New Orleans came away with a 38-20 home victory as 1.5-point favorites
in 2009 Saints won 38-14. And Saints had 3 takeways, 2 int and fumble.
This year felt better than those past two years.
