Let's use this thread for our running commentary on this evening's festivities.

I find it odd that Carolina hasn't made it known yet....still holding out hope for a trade partner I suppose. If they take a QB #1 overall, that would be a mistake. AJ Green would make Jimmy Clausen a lot better. If Clausen was in this draft, he'd be a 1st round pick.
Nconroe
04-28-2011, 06:58 PM
Ok, I'll guess going with Dareus, defense, no. 1 to Carolina. I guess could be any of 5 guys.
Ok, congrats to Cam Newton, I guess he'll do well.
Cam Newton
Blinn College is basking in the glory.

There is a reason bad teams are bad...
The good news is, a real player just slipped down one spot. :D

Looks like Von Miller to Denver, he sure looks good on hilites.
Now , Buffalo, I guess Dareus . And it is. I wish Texans could get a guy like him.

Patrick Peterson is still available...:D

lol at Cam Newton saying he is going on vacation.... Can just envision the Panthers asking for a do-over already.
Dude, now is when the work BEGINS
popanot
04-28-2011, 07:22 PM
Now that there will be no player trades during the draft and the owners getting reamed so far in court and probably no reasonable rookie salary cap, I doubt there will be any substantial trades at the top of the draft.

Does Tennessee or San Fran take the next Alex Smith?

Locker is the best QB in this draft. I'm not happy to see him in the AFC South. Give him two years with Britt and it's going to be ugly when we play the Titans.
Glad Aldon Smith is off the board and hoping somebody drafts Gabbert ahead of us. Give me THE Prince!!!
Redskins taking Prince or Quinn?...
edit: Ah, Gabbert makes sense....
Only 4 defensive players taken with #10 pending.....

I wanted The Prince to play CB and would have been fine with Cam Heyward if we wanted a 5-Tech. We could have traded down and gotten more picks too. Another draft, and another dissapointment. Anyway, maybe Watt can keep Cushing and Barwin clean to make plays.
Is there a CB in our future? Or are we just gonna give it up.

Some JJ Watt Analysis from NFL.com- looks pretty good
Height:6'5"
Weight:290 lbs.
Arm Length:34 in.
Hand Size:11 1/8 in.
College:Wisconsin
In the 2010 season, Watt finished the regular season with 59 tackles, seven sacks, two fumble recoveries, and an interception.[1] Watt was the 2010 recipient of the Ronnie Lott Award and was one of six finalist's for the Ted Hendricks Award
Pick Analysis: Wade Phillips' defense is predicated on bringing a pressure off the edges, but a strong interior presence is needed to make it happen. Watt is an ideal five-technique with the strength and power to dominate offensive tackles at the point of attack. He not only improves Houston's rush defense but gives them another high-motor player to incorporate into the pass rush.
Combine Stats
40 Yard Dash4.84 Time
Bench Press 34.0 Reps
Vertical Jump 37.0 Height
Broad Jump 120.0 Distance
3 Cone Drill 6.88 Time
20 Yard Shuttle 4.21 Time

After hearing McClain discuss his baggage, I don't think so. What a waste of talent.Yeah, he's supposed to be on-par with Peterson talent-wise but three failed drug tests (including one for codeine), an arrest for assault, and multiple impregnations are scaring off even the less risk-averse teams.

Ok let me get this straight...
So with our #11 pick in the draft we select Amobi Okoye....Oh my bad I meant Travis Johnson...Oh my bad I meant J.J. Watt
Watt is not either one of those guys. He is a high motor guy who just keeps coming. He is the safest pick at 11. And yes he is depth, that part I do not like. But I see them letting Smith go after this season.
I'm not happy with the pick, IMO DE is not the big need. It appears the Texans had Aldon Smith as their pick and that was blown up by San Fran. So they went safe. They were scared of taking another CB in the 1st to play across from last years joke of a pick ( he should be better in a decent NFL system this year), and they were scared off from Quin's medical and off field issues.
IMO the Texans will never win with Rick Smith drafting the safe pick. They do not have anyone on defense that teams have to scheme for other than Mario and he does not have the desire to be the best in the NFL.
They should have gone Quin IMO. I would have been OK with Prince, but not in love.
Now go up and grab Aaron Williams at 33 or so and that will show me some balls. Rick Smith has no balls.

So what do the Texans do in the 2nd? Move up and take Aaron Williams FS?
Move up and take OLB Brooks Reed? Stay where they are and draft OLB Brooks Reed?
How about taking Stephen Paea from OSU to play the NT with Mitchell? That would be a great fit for Wade's scheme. But also would be another rotational guy (Bench).
Or how about Dontay Moch to play OLB?
Brandon Harris would be a nice pick up to play CB.
Houston would be an ok pick in the 2nd round, but don't see that one.

I was too stupid in college to get thru advanced math courses like calculus, but I'm still confidant in my calculations that going from the 4-3 to the 3-4 means our need for Dlineman dropped by 25% ? So why do we use that precious first-round pick on a DLineman instead of a OLB or DBack where we really, really need help, especially an edge-rusher ?
I guess they were just too scared of Quinn to make that move ? If it was medical, OK I can buy that, but I hope it wasn't "off-field" issues because that kind of all too cautious behavior has cost the Texans valuable talent in the past.

I think that is where it gets a little fuzzy. Lots has been written about Phillips system being a "hybrid" 3-4.
Mario is in the last year of his contract, Smith has two years left on his contract. If we lose one or the other, or both, Watt has a year to work in a be solid.
Not a "sexy" pick, but in Wade I trust.
Until he pisses me off......
