Vance Joseph, who coached defensive backs at San Francisco, is the new Texans' secondary coach.

Joseph, who spent the last six years with the 49ers, will replace David Gibbs, who was fired after two seasons. Joseph will work with Perry Carter, the Texans' assistant defensive backs coach.

Joseph, a Louisiana native, played at the University of Colorado, where he also began his coaching career. With the 49ers, he shared the defensive backs coaching duties with Johnny Lynn.

The defensive coordinator at San Francisco has been Greg Manusky, who worked with new Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips at San Diego. Manusky highly recommended Joseph.

The Texans are looking for a linebackers coach. Dallas denied their permission to interview linebackers coach Reggie Herring, who worked with Phillips.

They just HAD to throw that CO statement in there.....at least it wasn't CO ST! :)

Came from the 49ers. I don't know much about him, but he has experience coaching Wade Phillips secondary style.

Here's his Wiki. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vance_Joseph)

PS. He played football at Colorado University...

This article says he played for the Broncos when Kubiak and Smith were there. He also coached the 49ers DBs when they were one of the worst passing defenses in the history of the league. Yes, even worse than the 2010 Texans. We'll see, I guess, but it's certainly not a hire that immediately makes you feel they'll improve just by his knowledge and presence.

Article also goes into why the Texans should sign Asomugha. It's fun to daydream, but fat chance of it happening!

Wow! This is really uninspiring. I guess that you can't always get what you want when it comes to position coaches since it's not a promotion from another team. I just would imagine that we could have found somebody who had a little better track record. I'd have preferred to go after a guy who just coached the Safeties or a Defensive Quality Control guy who has been successful than somebody who just happened to know Manusky who knows Phillips. We shall see if they can bring in some Free Agent Vet for the Secondary, because I just can't see this coaching change helping very much.

I hate being a complainer without bringing a list of alternatives....

I'm not quite sure if there was a sense of urgency to fill the Defensive Backs Coach before the SuperBowl, because there are some good coaches at Pitt, GB, and NYJ.

Ray Horton - Pitt
Darren Perry - GB
Joe Whitt Jr. - GB
Dennis Thurman - NYJ
Jim O'neil - NYJ

So, if we couldn't wait to have a guy come into the building to start brainstorming with Wade, then here are the coaches I'd have wanted to bring into the fold....

Steven Wilks - SD
Cris Dishman - SD
Dennis Allen - NO
Tony Oden - NO
Jimmy Lake - TB
Ron Meeks - Car
Joe Woods - Min
Matt Sheldon - Min

OK, that's all I wanted to get off my chest. I target those teams after looking at some various statistics such as Passer Rating, Passing Yards, Big plays over 20 yards and 40 yards, Sacks, Rushing Yards per game and per carry, Interceptions, and Passing TDs. Using those metrics, I surmised that the best Secondary performances were posted by these teams and I then examined their coaches....

1. SD
2. NO
3. Pitt
4. TB
5. Car
6. GB
7. Minn
8. NYJ

Cris Dishman or Tony Oden would have probably been the 'easiest' to get to run our Secondary and been able to create the most impact. Yet, we got San Francisco's Vance Joseph.

It does seem to be yet another Kubiak, Broncos, Colorado type hiring. I wonder if Wade was even consulted?

Yep, its a "Wade" guy.

I could be wrong, but I think the CO thing is a cowinky dink.
