I am bored, but getting more and more excited about the upcoming training camp. I know this is a week early and a few positions are still huge question marks as to the final roster.
This season is different in that we are going to be cutting a few players that will play somewhere else opening week. That is a 1st, and a testament to Smith and Kubiak.
I know the list I submit today will be different from the list I do next Sunday night and even the final list in September. But I have to start somewhere.
25 spots?
QB - (3) Schaub, Sage, Boyd - PS - Brink
RB - (4) Green, Brown, Taylor, Slaton - PS - Walker
FB - (2) Leach, Abbate - Significant cut Cook
WR- (5) AJ, Walters, AD, Jones, ? - who is the 5th WR
TE - (3) Daniels, Breunner, Dreessen
OL - (8) Winston, Myers, Pitts, Brown, Briesel, Butler, Eslinger, Weary, PS - Fenton OC, Studdard, Frye. This will change, we are going to cut someone solid at OL
3 spots
ST K - Brown
ST P - Turk
ST LS - Pittman
25 Spots?
DL (8) Williams, Weaver, Cochran, Okoye, Johnson, Okam, Maddox, Bulman
LB (7) Ryans, Greenwood, Diles, Colvin, Adibi, Bentley, Thompson - PS - Moffitt
DB(10) Bennett, Reeves, Molden, Robinson (possible PUP), Brown, Demps, Earl, Barber, Harrison, Fletcher
I have room to keep one more OL guy and drop a DB. Not all of my guys will make this team.
I feel Abbate, Taylor, Boyd, Butler, Eslinger are questionable and on a bubble.
Defensively Cochran, Maddox, Bulman, Bentley, Thompson and Fletcher
are on the bubble.

Nice effort, thanks.
I think a lot of you are going to be disappointed when Demarcus Faggins does in fact make the final cut. He won't beat out Dunta (who will probably be PUP'd anyway), Bennett, Reeves, or Molden, but a PUP'd Dunta means Faggins is our dimeback, not Fletcher, imo.
A couple old guys miss your cut in Kalu and Zgonina. Ferguson is also a goner. No complaints there, you're probably right.
Abbate might beat out Cook, but at this point I still think Cook has the edge. Specials teams will drive the call there. I wouldn't be too shocked if Kubiak decides to carry just one FB in favor of an extra RB or OL, maybe stashing Abbate on the PS.
Your 5th WR might be David Anderson since the team seems to like him on special teams.
The WR I want to watch in camp though is Tim Carter. A 2nd round pick from Auburn, he is sort of the Andre Davis candidate of this year's group. I haven't watched him in awhile, but he had some speed back in the day (4.3 forty iirc). Interesting bloodlines... bio says he is cousins of Dwight Gooden, Gary Sheffield, Al Harris, and Ozzie Newsome. He hasn't returned kicks much in the NFL, but he averaged 24 yds per return in college.

I think that list looks pretty accurate. To tell the truth, I'm not too concerned with who we cut because, barring injuries to other players, they are all guys who I don't think will ever be much help to us. To me, next year will really be much more interesting because we will be adding 7 new rookies and with the exception of Green, right now I can't think of anyone who will be cut because of age. Not to mention that we may have cap space to add a couple of free agents or so.
I would like to see Cook get cut theis year and Abbate sent to the PS. If Leach gets injured, it seems to me we could find a way to work around it for one game, and then activate Abbate. I wouldn't be shocked if Cook failed to get picked up by another team, so he might be a available to rejoin the team if Leach went down with a season ending injury.
I think the other really interesting thing to watch will be who can adapt to Gibbs' blocking system. There may be a surprise or two there, guys let go just because they don't fit.

Cook - does appear to have the edge on paper. But he is also a high cap guy and Abbate is an ex LB so special teams play should be a plus. I can see Bigtinylittle's scenario of Abbate to the PS and Cook cut playing out. In that case Dreessen would be the backup gameday FB.
I think the signing of Colvin and the improvement of Bulman could lead to the pushing out of Kalu and Zgonina. Though one of them may still make the team when the pads go on. Bulman still needs to show he can play when the real hitting starts.
As to the 5th WR, I'm with you Keith, I want to see Tim Carter ,Harry Williams and the rookie Darnell Jenkins, along with Anderson.
Some other guys that I want to see practice and in games are Jesse Nading DE, Gabe Long DT, Ben Moffitt LB, and Charles Spencer (If we where going with a power scheme, I believe he would have a chance, as is he might be able to play OG for someone like the Cards, or the Steelers).
Getting closer to next Saturday, 8am.

I worry about Weary, and you might notice he was not in the top 5 OL guys on my list. I want to see him playing in Gibbs system. I know Vinny says Weary has quickness, but I am not as confident as he is.
Also I am interested in seeing Studdard and Frye and what group they are working with.

The only thing that jumped out at me was I don't see us carrying five safeties.
I think Anderson would have to be considered in the lead for the 5th WR spot, but only because he's been here and I can see Carter or Williams winning that spot.
I also agree with Keith, I think Faggins makes this team.
Nice effort, thanks.

ME!!!
but since i realize it's probably going to happen that way i can curb my dissappointment now...

i'd say kalu is still in with cochran the odd man out. no way do i think both cochran and maddox beat out the wily veteran.

i'm thinking kubiak takes the 1 FB route. i remember reading somewhere that FB's were fairly unnecessary in zbs...but after leach the talent drop off is substantial.
Your 5th WR might be David Anderson since the team seems to like him on special teams.
meh. he's replaceable. i'd rather have the guys mentioned that could fly rather than kevin walter-lite.

Hasn't Kubiak only carried 2 QBs on the 53 man roster? Has he indicated that he plans to deviate from this this year?

That was the story during the Quinn Gray experiment....that not having someone behind Sage last year when Schaub was out really scared him. Kubiak claimed he was a changed man and wanted to have three QB's this year....I never bought it. I just assumed that was just spin until a deal for Sage was final. That never happened and they released Gray. It will be interesting to see if he does go with three.
I think it's possible that Brink beats out Boyd if he does.

If he truly wanted a number 3 behind Sage, Gray seems like he would have been a perfect candidate. I can't imagine why we would cut Gray if we wanted a third QB on the roster. I'll be very surprised if we carry a third QB (and will be second guessing our release of Gray).

The team never said it, but McClain referred to Gray not bothering to learn the playbook, it was inferred that Gray was sign to be Schaubs backup and Sage would be traded, and when that did not happen Gray pouted.
Kubiak never called him out in public, but let him go, and the last I saw he had not been resigned anywhere.

Brisiel is the backup C. With Weary or Studdard taking the RG spot. It was really a tough decision for me to pick Studdard over White, who can play C and G, but I just have a feeling that Studdard isnt going anywhere. He was on the roster all year and when they brought Brisiel up Studdard was still playing second fiddle. I hate to say it but I think the personal relationship there is too much to see him not on the 53. Im not saying he doesnt have potential but when you get beat out by a guy that was on the PS most of the year and you werent it cant be good.
I put 3 QB's up because Kubes said that he didnt want to be down to just 1 QB. I believe that you can declare an emergency QB that doesnt count towards the active roster limit on gameday, he just has to be on the 53 man roster. Which makes carrying and using a 3rd easier.
I picked Boyd over Brinks because he has time in the system, and I think Kubes would be a bit more comfy with him as the #3 to start the season. If the team wants the PS space Brinks would take for someone else more than the added value of Boyd I could see him on the roster, but that is pretty out there.

Brisiel is the backup C.
I forgot that he has OC time in Europe also. That could mean Eslinger is off my list and Frye or Studdard make the team. If you use Kubiak's quotes then Studdard is in.
BTW I used the same logic when picking my QBs, Boyd has more time in the system, and will have to be really bad to not get the #3 nod, if he does take 3 QBs.
Nice piece PK. I agree, I don't think Faggins makes this team, (at least I hope not!).

I know PUP list counts against 80 man preseason roster, but does PUP list also count against the 53 man regular season roster?
I think they will keep three QBs this year.

Not the way I understand it. That means when dunta comes back, someone will have to be cut.
I don't see us keeping 3 QB's, though it is a possibility. We'll have boyd/brink on the PS to call up should disaster occur. My understanding was that your emergency QB could be a PS guy, but I could be wrong. Seems like I remembered Boyd being listed as our emergency QB last year for at least a game, but I could be making that up.
I saw Quinn Gray in Indianapolis the other day. They're stockpiling quarterbacks like you wouldn't believe. Sorgi, Gray, and Kentucky's own Big Blue Bohemoth, Jared Lorenzen all got time last week. Additionally, Mike Hart looks like a player.

I actually thought Gray looked pretty good in the HOF game....but I was also pleasantly surprised with Shane Boyd against the Broncos. I thought that Brink would be the #3....whether that was on the practice squad or Kubes actually keeps three QB's. Now I'm not so sure.

Colvin came off the line last night as fast as any player ever wearing a texans uniform. I think that buys him a spot.
At RB I hope Walker makes the team, but it is not a big deal.
I'd like to see us keep 9 on the OL with White sticking around.
At this time of year people often fall in love with guys who have never done anything but had a good preseason (bulman over weaver and colvin). But remember, it is not just about who looked good against scrubs the past month. How these guys have played before does matter.
I don't think Colvin did anything to earn a spot. If you are going to be a specialist, then you need to specialize. Pittman snaps, Brown kicks, Turk punts... Colving gets blocked by second and third stringers.
It will be interesting to see what happens this afternoon.
I have a UMmass bias, that is why I threw Shipp in there. He is the type of guy who can run it in a pinch, play ST and Gary will call him a "professional."
