View Full Version : It's B-A-C-K.. The ITB Suicide Contest
HPF Bob
09-07-2010, 01:04 AM
More popular that a haiku contest, more powerful than an Eric Winston throwdown, it's the 2010 ITB.com Suicide contest.
For the uninitiated, the quick rules for the game are that you choose one game each week where you declare which team wins. If that team loses, you're out of the contest. If your team wins, you continue to the next week but you are forbidden from choosing that team again for the rest of the game, making each week a little harder because you'll have fewer good teams left to choose from.
Obviously, whichever game you choose, you have to call it before that game kicks off and you can't change your mind after the game you select has begun (i.e. don't call Tennessee and then change your selection to San Diego at halftime of the Tennessee game.)
I don't know if Keith has any prizes for this year but, if you ask nicely, maybe he'll come up with a grand prize.
Here's your Week 1 schedule: (all times Central)
Thurs, Sep 9:
Minnesota at New Orleans - NBC 7:30
Sunday, Sep 12 (which should be a national holiday):
Atlanta at Pittsburgh - FOX 12:00
Carolina at NY Giants - FOX 12:00
Cincinnati at New England - CBS 12:00
Cleveland at Tampa Bay - CBS 12:00
Denver at Jacksonville - CBS 12:00
Detroit at Chicago - FOX 12:00
Indianapolis at Houston - CBS 12:00
Miami at Buffalo - CBS 12:00
Oakland at Tennessee - CBS 12:00
Arizona at St. Louis - FOX 3:15
Green Bay at Philadelphia - FOX 3:15
San Francisco at Seattle - FOX 3:15
Dallas at Washington - NBC 7:20
Monday, Sep 13:
Baltimore at NY Jets - ESPN 6:00
San Diego at Kansas City - ESPN 9:15
Since I'm practically a jinx at this, I'll try to take one for the team and choose: Indianapolis
Good luck, everyone.

I proudly wore my t-shirt from last year's contest just last week.
And to open the season I go with the Chargers.
And you know it's a week of games that look evenly matched when you go with the jeckyl and hyde chargers on the road with all 32 teams in action.
My reasoning is that even if I am wrong, I get to stay in longer than everyone else who gets eliminated this week since it's the late game monday.
Keith

I'll take the Titans.
And, yeah, winner gets a free ItB t-shirt, size XL, shipped anywhere in the U.S.

I was thinking about taking either the Lions or the Chiefs as upsets, but since a couple of you have already chosen their opponents, I'll just hope that you eliminate yourselves. Therefore, I'm going out on a different limb. Let the new Mike Holmgren/Jake DelHomme regime get off to a good start. I'm taking the team from Cleveland.

As is usually the case, Week 1 wipes out about half the field, so here's who's one-and-done like those latter-day Bobby Knight teams at tourney time:
Bob - Indy - yer out
Machoneil - SD - buh bye
NConroe - SD - see ya
painekiller - Indy - farewell
barrett - SD - no mas
Roy P - Cleveland - adios
Fonz the Boss - Dallas - you won! Oh wait, there's a flag...
superbowlbound - Cleveland - au revoir
The Matrix 31 - San Fran - blown up like a gas pipeline
BigBull - SD - that'll teach you for getting in late
cloudwasher - SD - you too
I regret that I have but one life to give to my Texans...
So, who survived? First, all those who took the Bears deserve an asterisk:
*Arky - CHI
*Mike - CHI
*dadmg - CHI
(a win's a win. right?)
And here's the rest of who are moving on:
chuck - NYG
Keith - TEN
Foo'ball Fool - NYG
Warren - NYG
popanot - NO
ArlingtonTexan - NYG
NickO - MIA
Keep in mind, you lucky ten, that you can no longer use that team for the rest of the contest (not sure you Bears fans would even want to).

Young Colt didn't look half bad considering the crappy teammates he has around him. On the rare occasions he had time to throw, he looked very capable. Both INTs were on tipped balls. He's certainly no Schaub but, for his first NFL start and against the dirtiest team in the league, he looked better than I feared he would.
Could the refs have looked any more gay with their pink whistles?

There have been several contestants this year done in by the Raiders.
And then there were two - the former HPF contributors, Keith and Warren - mano a mano.
Keith: TEN, ATL, NE, NO, IND, PIT, BAL
Warren: NYG, GB, NE, NO, IND, PIT, BAL
Obviously, they've been singing from the same hymnal now for over a month so we'll need to see some creativity now in order to make this exciting.

That explains why I'm almost always eliminated in the first week. I suggest the Giants and - BOOM - they lose to the hapless Cowboys.
The Bucs won, however, so the game marches on:

It's interesting to me that neither guys has picked the Texans.
And also when both of you go with the same team, it defeats the purpose, at some point one of you has to win this thing, so stop picking the same teams. I get that it is cool to be this deep into the season, but now it's time to get a winner and having mirror picks will not accomplish that.
Congratulations to both of you for getting this far.

I think the fact that neither of us has picked the Texans has a direct correlation to the fact that we're both still alive. And I'm not yet ready to pass on what I think is the most likely winner left on my board because Keith picks it. We're just past the midway point; I willing to stay boring for a little while longer.

1. Avoid making a pick on your home team. You can be too close to the situation to make a rational opinion.
2. I'm here to win, not entertain. I finished 2nd in this last year after like 13 weeks, so I gotta be me. :p

Sorry! I'm not picking against (or for) the Texans, and I'mnot ballsy enough to take the Niners, Bengals, Cowboys, or Eagles this week... though I gave each some thought. One more week of boredom.

We can pass a rule for next year that when the field is reduced to the last four, the remaining players cannot choose the same team that week as another player, making it first-come-first-served each week. It wouldn't apply to earlier rounds and would certainly make the endgame quicker.

I like it the way it is, actually. I just like to make fun of these two grandmas.
Thanks for managing the game year after year, by the way.
I dunno, there was that one year (2008?) where there were so many knocked out there was time to run a 2nd pool... I know cause I won the 2nd contest. So, that might be something to consider in regards to instituting a picking-the-same rule...

FWIW, I can't believe Fox is going to send the whole country the Rams and Broncos for the DH game so look for them to move another game into the 3:15 slot like PHI-CHI, GB-ATL or TAM-BAL.
UPDATE: Fox has moved both the PHI-CHI and TAM-BAL games to 3:15 starts. Check your listings.

The Jets win and the tie is unbroken. So now the December Rule goes into effect. Any remaining players cannot choose the same team that week as another player. It will be first-come, first-serve. And if anyone is bold enough to pick the Iggles over our Texans, make sure to get it in before kickoff.
