View Full Version : Favre to the Texans?

Adam Schefter reports that the best team to transition to from the Packers would be the Houston Texans. He said they do have alot of money tied up in Matt Schaub so might not happen.

Just before that he said Farve would only go to someone that's a contender.

Thought I'd throw that out there for you guys about our future!

No way. Not going to happen.

Yeah, I agree. I should've emphasized the important part to me with a question.

If we didn't have quite abit of money tied up with Schaub would Farve consider us "a contender"? Just how close are we really? I think we 9 and 7, maybe 10 and 6 this year and make the playoffs for a taste.

This would never happen. I have heard them on the radio the last few weeks and Houston has come up as a great fit for Farve and the team. I think that is about the dumbest thing I have heard though. It shows the lack of knowledge they have about our teams identity, direction, and leadership.

We arent in a win now mode. Kubiak and Smith are trying to build a team that can compete for years and years, not just throw up a hail mary and hope like hell we catch it. Bringing in Farve would be a bigger disruption than a help to get this team to be able to compete every year.

Smith and Kubiak have a master plan, and it doesn't allow for a sidetrack like Favre would be.

You mean people actually get paid for saying stuff like that? This goes to show why I never read or listen to what the national guys say about the Texans. They rarely have a clue. Stick with the local guys if you want to know about the Texans. By the way, our offense, even with our all-star receiver, our starting RB and our QB out for a big chunk of games, still ranked well ahead of our defense in NFL stats.

This is about as likely to happen as Bud Adams selling the Titans and trying to buy the Texans.

Why do we want Brett Favre when we already have Sage Rosenfels?

But, seriously, as long as the Texans are selling out, there's no reason to bring Favre to Houston. He's an expensive short-term solution to a long-term problem. This isn't like Roger Clemens signing with the Astros. The Astros were already a veteran team with some of their best players close to retirement. The Texans are a young team who don't think they are one or two players away from making a Super Bowl run.

The comment misses the mark on so many levels. Besides, didn't I see a crawl where Favre wanted to play for another cold-weather team? That ain't us.

Absolutely a bad idea for any team. Farve has been pretty bad last several years, ok, last year better than previous several, just luck. He needs to retire. He was good in what was it, 1993, not 2008.

besides, it's not like espn is looking around for more stories haha...they've settled squarely in the asscrack between the packers and brett favre.

these national networks need to keep somebody, who views football through a pair of goggles known as common sense, in every city so they can just call them up right before they say something stupid to find out if what they are saying is silly or not.

JUST LUCK?

Sage Rosenfels 2007 STATS
RAT 84.8 YDS 1,684 TD 15 INT 12

Favre hasnt missed a game since 1993. Thats 16 games a year for 15 years. Some of you need to get a grip on youre perspective of this team. You are all feeling a little to warm and fuzzy about the Texans. I have high hopes to but cmon man, if we have a chance to get one of the premier QB's of the last 15 years we should jump all over it. Yeh were building a winner here and going about the right way but the QB position is the most important position there is.

You really think Shaub would mind being tudored by a HOF QB for the next couple of years? Do you honestly believe Favres presence would harm this teams growth? One of the beggest question marks about this team is whether or not Schaub is ready/capable of being the leader of this team. He (Shaub) could learn from one of if not the best leaders the NFL has ever had.

We dont know for sure if Shaub can last a whole year. Sage is a FA after next year. Do you honestly think he'll be back? I know it wont happen but if you could get Favre for a 3rd or 4th round pick or even for Sage, DO IT NOW!

If i truly thought the texans were a Qb away from being a superbowl team it would be worth it. Outside of that, the texans need to find out if Schaub is a legitimate starting NFL QB, and they can't do that with Schaub spending time as understudying for another year or two.

I dont see Favre giving the Texans any better chance to goto the playoffs this year than either of our QB's. He may have been a great QB, but this team needs stability in the positions we have good players and concentration and growth in the areas that are weak. Not shakup for the sake of bringing in a legend.

If I was a fan of teams like the Packers, Carolina, Minnesota, Chicago and a few other that a QB like Farve could put us over the cusp then maybe, but still you get 1-2 years from him. It makes no sense.

It is also a matter of our FO's mentality, which is not spend big and win now. Kubiak is a coach that wants to build a team to win for years and is willing to take some time to make it happen. He isnt instant about instant gratification.

McGinn writes that a source said Favre had continued to use a Packers-issued cell phone and that when the team checked the phone records it found “repeated calls to coach Brad Childress and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell.”
The possibility of Favre having used a phone issued by the Packers had been speculated on last week after the Associated Press reported that Green Bay informed the NFL it felt “an investigation of the phone records would show more than ‘normal contact’ between the Vikings and Favre, even before he formally asked for his release to play for another team.”

that's exactly the problem homie, we would be getting brett favre at 38 not brett favre "of the last 15 years". and averaged out, his last handful of years have been not-so great.

You really think Shaub would mind being tudored by a HOF QB for the next couple of years?yes, he was promised a starting job. Do you honestly believe Favres presence would harm this teams growth?without question yes. you think the players opinion of favre's little kicking and screaming ordeal of the last few weeks has gone over well with anyone? it's a question mark because we haven't seen enough. as in: we need to see more schaub. besides, favre seemed like an awesome mentor to aaron rodgers...

We dont know for sure if Shaub can last a whole year.
what makes you think a 38 year old with 27 seasons of football on his body can? just because he did it last year and 26 seasons before that? that won't mean anything to anybody on the field.

Sage is a FA after next year. Do you honestly think he'll be back? I know it wont happen but if you could get Favre for a 3rd or 4th round pick or even for Sage, DO IT NOW!

According to the Wisconsin State Journal, the Texans are one of eight team the Packers thinks are possible trading partners in a deal for Favre.

GREEN BAY — As the Green Bay Packers wait to see whether Brett Favre will indeed file his reinstatement papers with the NFL, the club is working its way through a list of teams it sees as potential trading partners for the sort-of-retired quarterback.

According to a league source, the teams on that list include the New York Jets, the Baltimore Ravens, the Miami Dolphins and the Houston Texans in the AFC and the Carolina Panthers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Atlanta Falcons and Washington Redskins in the NFC.

Man, I just don't see this happening. I don't think this is the direction that Smith and Kubiak really want to go, especially with Sage still at the backup. Also, I am not sure I would like this move either. I can't imagine GB would give him away, and the Texans need thier draft picks.

The way I see it is Green Bay doesn't want Favre because it would rather move forward with Aaron Rodgers (despite Favre's legendary status there and the PR nightmare of telling him he's not wanted). I could be wrong but I suspect it is a virtual guarantee that Kubiak and Smith wouldn't trade Schaub for Rodgers. If that's the case, why would the Texans want Favre over Schaub when even Green Bay doesn't want him over Rodgers?

Personally, I think the Texans see a type of Tom Brady in Matt Schaub. More of a calm, careful, methodical, cerebral QB than an athletic maverick.

The athletic playmakers do put butts in the seats because of the excitement they create but the cerebral QB's throughout the history of the league have more wins...Staubach, Griese (not Brian), etc.

I respect Favre for many reasons but he should stay retired. Where's he really gonna go that's considered a contender that doesn't already have a QB?

heresay is GB fans and players are split on support of Farve vs Rogers. many sites support that.

Just to look at a few of Farve's numbers of last three years and career to compare with say Schaub or Rosenfelds. 05 and 06 were not so good at all for Farve.

QB year Pct TD INT SCK Fumb RTG TO PT/G Wins
Farve 2007 66.5 28 15 15 9 95.7 +4 27.2 13
Farve 2006 56.0 18 18 21 8 72.7 8
Farve 2005 61.3 20 29 24 10 70.9 4
Farve overall 61.4 442 288 439 147 85.7

Schaub 07 66.4 9 9 16 7 87.2 -13 23.7 4
Rosenfels 7 64.2 15 12 6 4 84.8 4

Carr 2006 68.3 11 12 41 16 74.4 6

just stats, choose the ones you think might help your argument. to me looks like qb sacks, time to run a play, has a large effect on results

Do you really think any of the teammates will/would go on the record and complain about the almighty Farve? Not just no but hell no they will not. Unlike Farve himself (when he inserted himself into Walkers negotiation) they know when to be quite.

That said, the NFL network did report that many of the packers wish Brett and the story would go away. Sorry i do not have it Tivoed.

Why would the players think that about superman? because when Farve retired, the team needed to move on and it did. The management and players prepared themselves for life after Farve, now he decides that he is bigger than the Packers and he wants to play. Never mind they have 3 quality QBs on the roster, unproven yes, but quality.

Farve go to CBS or FOX or ESPN and work on Sunday.

I would guess that they will be looking for a first day pick. The Texans need all of their draft picks. They aren't good/desperate enough to give away a high draft pick for a 1-2 year rental.

This is pretty much how I feel about youre responses to this thread. :p

c'mon man, that's just a silly thing to say. what are you expecting? please take favre and 2 1st rounders? anything less than that isn't even getting a second thought. there is no reason to place all the faith in the world in schaub, i understand that but what he's shown has been very good. at this point though, despite earning his legendary status, favre is not a clearly better quarterback than schaub.

This is a clear indicator that you are clueless about QBplay.
I like Shaub but to say he is a better QB than Favre is moronic. Schaub has accomplished nothing and Favre is a shoein for the HOF. In short Schaub doesnt deserve to hold Favres jock strap.

Favre won the Associated Press's MVP Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award three times, all in consecutive years (1995, 1996, and 1997; the last shared with Barry Sanders).
In 1999, he was ranked number 82 on The Sporting News' list of the 100 Greatest Football Players.[70] In 2005, TSN published another special feature honoring the 50 Greatest Quarterbacks. With his career statistics considerably augmented, Favre was ranked number 4, behind Johnny Unitas, Joe Montana and John Elway, and just ahead of previous Packer quarterback legend Bart Starr.
Favre was named the Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year in 2007.[71]
Favre was selected to play in the Pro Bowl nine times in his career.[72]
Favre was a seven-time All-Pro selection.
Favre was named to the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team.
Received the NFC Offensive Player of the Week honor 12 times.
Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle declared November 29, 2004 as Brett Favre Day to honor Favre's 200th consecutive NFL regular season start.[73] That night, the Packers defeated the St. Louis Rams on Monday Night Football.
Men's Health Magazine voted Favre the "Toughest Person in America" in 2003.[74]
Chris Greicius Celebrity Award from the Make a Wish Foundation in 2007 for "being a true standout, even among the many generous celebrities who help create magical experiences for the kids who wish to meet them."[75]
United States Sports Academy Male Athlete of the Year Award in 2007 finishing ahead of Tiger Woods and Tom Brady.[76]
NFC Offensive Player of the Year in 2007 presented by the NFL 101 Award Committee.[77]
FedEx Air player of the year award in 2007.[78]

Records and milestones
Favre currently possesses most of the well-known NFL career records for quarterbacks, including:

Most AP NFL MVP awards: 3 (1995, 1996, 1997)[79]
Most consecutive starts by a quarterback (NFL): 253[4] (275 including playoffs)
Most wins by a starting quarterback (NFL) regular season career: 160[4] (Regular season record: 160-93)
Most career passing touchdowns: 442[80][81]
Most career passing yards: 61,655[80]
Most career pass completions: 5,377[82][4]
Most career pass attempts: 8,758[4][3][83]
Most career interceptions thrown: 288[80][84]
Most career games with at least three touchdowns: 63[48]
Favre holds the record for consecutive starts by a quarterback with 253. His streak ranks behind only Jim Marshall, who started 270 straight games.[4]

In the playoffs, Favre stands behind only Joe Montana in pass completions, passing touchdowns, passing yards and passing attempts.

In addition, Favre owns a number of team records, having printed his name into almost every passing category in the annals of Green Bay Packers history, most recently setting the team record for consecutive completions with 20 on November 22, 2007, against the Detroit Lions.[85] With 38 "come-from-behind" 4th quarter wins & 2 more overtime victories, Brett Favre is the Green Bay Packers record holder and second only to John Elway's 47 4th quarter or OT "come-back wins", in NFL history.

Consecutive starts streak
Since first being named the starter of the Green Bay Packers before playing the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 27, 1992 Brett Favre never missed a game.[86] He is currently in first place for the most consecutive starts by a quarterback in the NFL and one of only five quarterbacks to have started over 100 consecutive games in NFL history. He failed to finish a game due to injury on only six occasions since taking control of the Packers as quarterback.[87] Besides Favre, there are only two other active streaks of 100 or more games, those of Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. Since the beginning of Favre's consecutive start streak, 212 other quarterbacks have started in the NFL,[88][89] 11 of them being back-ups to Favre at one point.[86] Among his former backups are: Don Majkowski, Ty Detmer, Mark Brunell, Steve Bono, Doug Pederson, Matt Hasselbeck, Danny Wuerffel, Aaron Brooks, and J. T. O'Sullivan. Two veteran backups to Favre never started another NFL game: Jim McMahon, and T.J. Rubley. The consecutive starts streak is widely considered one of the most notable streaks in sports, so much so that the Pro Football Hall of Fame has as an exhibit displaying the jersey Favre wore during his record breaking 117th consecutive start as a quarterback, and a section of their website devoted to what the Hall of Fame calls an "Iron Man".[90]

SHAREHOLDERS HOSTILE TO THOMPSON
Posted on July 24th, 2008
As Packers General Manager Ted Thompson awkwardly attempts to keep the fans happy while keeping the franchise’s most popular player away, he had a rough go of it today at the team’s shareholders’ meeting.
Multiple reports indicate that the majority of the thousands of shareholders who showed up today in Green Bay were anti-Thompson and pro-Brett […]

GOODELL TELLS PACKERS TO WRAP UP FAVRE FIASCO
Posted on July 23rd, 2008
ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has advised Packers G.M. Ted Thompson to truly move on without Brett Favre if the team plans to move on without Brett Favre.
And so it apparently was the call from Goodell that got the Packers to begin making calls in an effort to find a trade […]

FAVRE SHOWS AT LAMBEAU
Posted by Mike Florio on July 19, 2008, 11:10 p.m. EDT
As expected, “retired” quarterback Brett Favre made an appearance at Lambeau Field on Saturday night to introduce former Packers center Frank Winters for induction in the team’s Hall of Fame.
Speaking for roughly three minutes as he introduced Winters, Favre did not address the lingering tug-o-war between him and the team regarding his potential unretirement.
“That’s the thing about Green Bay,” said Favre. ”It’s a special place. There’s a lot of tradition. You think of the Packers, you think of all these great names, and to be a part of that — and I know Frank feels honored — is a special thing. I’m thankful that he asked me to be here.”
Favre also received the team’s annual MVP award on Saturday, and he called himself “an old, gray-haired quarterback showing I can still do it.”
That’s the problem. He still can do it. And still wants to.

well this site seems to have a lot of info on Brett. including links to his homepage.

sounds like if Brett petitions NFL to come back by Sunday then Green Bay can keep him or release him. And if released NY Jets and Tampa Bay have most interest.

here is a packer message board and thread on the division of team, obviously lots of different opinions, and this is where Brett did so well.

I think best way out is as someone mentioned, get a TV job for Sundays as an analyst during halftime and postgames. Do it quick.

i'm not going any farther with you man. namecalling, taking what i say out of context, assuming what i think, all for a .00000000001% chance of favre ever coming here....no thankity.

i have a manbone for schaub? hardly. i haven't posted 6000 words about schaub on a different teams' message board.

Anyone who even considers wanting Favre on this team should look at the media circus that surrounds this attention whore. Would you seriously want all THAT surrounding our team? I certainly wouldn't.

why am i even keeping this up? favre to the texans: bum-dum pshhhhhh!! favre using a packer cell phone to call the vikings: bum-dum pshhhhhH!! brett favre is a 4 year old girl crossing her arms and stomping the ground. you know what bad little children need? a good shutting the f up.

I am not a fan of the deal either, but for a HOFamer like Brett he doesnt deserve this type of talk. That guy deserve much respect.

not brett favre. We already have a cheaper version to throw multiple interceptions for us.

Now if you are asking what defense and running game I'd rather have I would say the Jets. Or if you are asking whose schedule I'd rather have, I'd say the Jets. But I still wouldn't touch Brett Favre and his league leading INT total.

Nope.

Favre - 20TDs / 13Ints.

Our QBs - 15TDs / 17Ints.

Yeah, I hate it when your QB has more TDs than INTs.

He also leads the #2 scoring offense (25th last year) in the leauge, hasnt missed a game this year and is leading his team to a playoff berth. Yeh what a looser huh? Wish our QB was that big of a looser.

Probably the same people who chanted We Want Sage at the dolphins game.I'll agree with you this wouldn't be the best place or fit for Favre, nor have I ever stated that I wanted him here (and wanting Sage is laughable). I just think the INT argument against Favre doesn't hold much weight. So what if he leads the league in INTs? He has more TDs than INTs, he's tough as hell, knows how to lead, and his teams win. We could only be so lucky to have those sort of tangibles or qualities at QB.

So I noticed you dug up this old thread after months of silence back in November. Any reason you didn't dig it up again lately?

Perhaps...
-(NFL leading 22 ints),
-Missed zero games (you were big on that) but has a 38 year old shoulder that gave out half way through the season leading to an epic collapse with the NFL's easiest schedule (2 TD and 9 INT in the last 5 games).
-Enough Pick 6's this year to start at QB for LSU
-probably got his coach fired and made Jets fans miss Chad Pennington

I guess It's easy to fall in love with an older player based on what they've done before. We did it with Colvin, Molden, and Green. I'm glad we didn't do it with Favre. It made no sense. Schaub is pleanty good enough to take us a long way if we surround him with more good players. And his best years should still be ahead of him.
By the way, if Favre retires now, how do the Jets know he really means it?

barrett

I notice Mussop had nothing to say.

Luckily a few of Favre's teammates did. Maybe we can take theirs as the final word for whether Favre would have been a good pick-up for us this year.

From Thomas Jones - "The other day, the three interceptions really hurt us. I mean, that's just reality," Jones told the radio station. "If I were to sit here and say, 'Oh, man, it's OK,' that's not reality. ... I don't like it, I know everybody else on the team doesn't like it. You're jeopardizing the whole team because you're having a bad day. To me, that's not fair to everybody else. You're not the only one on the team. So when you get to the wire and somebody is just giving the game up, I mean, it's just not [fair]."

...

A veteran Jets player, quoted anonymously by Newsday, described Favre as a "distant" teammate who, when at the Jets' practice facility, spent his down time away from teammates in an office specially designated for him. "There was a lot of resentment in the room about him. He never socialized with us, never went to dinner with anyone."

Sounds like our front office was smart to stay well away from Favre, especially if they wanted to keep their job.
