What are our needs?
FS - never been addressed
NT - also never addressed
OL- Time to start stock piling some talent.
WILL - Depth and future upgrade
CB - you never have enough CBs
QB- back up / future?
RB - You never have enough RBs
Walters has us taking
24 Houston Texans: Jared Crick, DT, Nebraska
The Texans had major problems at defensive tackle in 2009, but aside from drafting Earl Mitchell in the third round, they failed to address the position. They may fix things in the 2011 NFL Draft.
and
55 Houston Texans: Nate Potter, OT, Boise State
If Duane Brown doesn't improve his play this season, the Texans may search for some left tackle competition in the 2011 NFL Draft.
DraftSite.com has us taking
15 Houston Houston Robert Quinn* DE UNC 6' 5" 260
and
47 Houston Houston Ron Johnson WR USC
I am starting the watch list:
Deunta Williams, FS, North Carolina
Ras-I Dowling, CB, Virginia
Rahim Moore, FS, UCLA
Mike Pouncey, C/G, Florida
Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU
Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama
Aaron Williams, CB, Texas
Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska
DeAndre McDaniel, S, Clemson
Casey Matthews, LB ,Oregon
Jared Crick, DT, Nebraska
Brandon Harris, CB, Miami
Bruce Carter, OLB, North Carolina
Curtis Brown, CB, Texas
Stefen Wisniewski, C/G, Penn State
Will Hill, FS, Florida
Rashad Carmichael, CB, Virginia Tech
Blake Gideon, FS, Texas
Nate Potter, OT, Boise State
Kris O'Dowd, C, USC
Chris Culliver, FS/KR, South Carolina
Rodney Hudson, G, Florida State

Here is an early mock from DraftSite.com
15 Allen Bailey DT Miami 6' 4" 288
47 Kendric Burney CB UNC 5' 9" 180
79 Jerrod Johnson QB Texas A&M 6' 5" 243
111 Jonathan Freeny DE Rutgers 6' 3" 250
143 Leonard Hankerson WR Miami 6' 3" 215
175 Harvey Unga RB BYU 6' 0" 239 (is going to be in the Supplemental draft in July)
207 Jeff Wills OT Minnesota 6' 7" 355
Cherry picking cuz I just don't see most of these guys as the types Kubiak drafts.
15 Mike Pouncey OG Florida 6' 5" 320
47 Kristofer O'Dowd OC USC 6' 5" 300
79 Jerrod Johnson QB Texas A&M 6' 5" 243 (I'm a little biased here but I like this kid, and coming here would give him time to be groomed)
111 Butch Lewis OT USC 6' 5" 290
143 Jermale Hines S Ohio State 6' 2" 210
175 Thomas Weber K Arizona State 6' 1" 207
207 Ryan Donahue PT Iowa 6' 3" 180
I admit I do not know most of the guys yet, but you can see a pattern in my thinking, OL OL OL, then special teams. I think Brown is gone, and I think Rackers will be gone before this time next season.

A new mock is up from Draftsite.com
22 Prince Amukamara CB Nebraska 6' 1" 205
54 Chimdi Chekwa CB Ohio State 6' 0" 190
86 Jabaal Sheard DE Pittsburgh 6' 4" 260
118 Markus White DE Florida State 6' 4" 260
150 Marcus Gilbert OT Florida 6' 5" 320
182 Kyle Adams TE Purdue 6' 4" 252
214 Aaron Corp QB USC 6' 3" 200
That is one of the worse mocks ever.
I currently think the team is going to need to draft OG/OC, S, OT, DE, MLB, WR, QB .
Outside the OG/OC and S all the guys are to upgrade the depth/rotational guys. This team is finally at a point where the 1st rounder should not be handed the spot to play.
I am assuming that the CB, RB and DT position are full for now with young guys that should mature.
Any thoughts from you guys?

Draftsite.com has a new mock up:
20 Michael Floyd* WR Notre Dame 6' 3" 220
52 Chykie Brown CB Texas 6' 0" 190
84 Mason Foster ILB Washington 6' 2" 244
116 Ted Laurent DT Mississippi 6' 0" 305
148 Kevin Riley QB Cal 6' 2" 221
180 Devin Newsome S San Jose State 5' 10" 185
212 Chris Carter OLB Fresno State 6' 2" 230
A much better mock based on position then the last one. WR in the 1st is unlikely unless something unforeseen happens, trying not to jinx anyone here, but I am getting real close. And you never have enough CBs.
1st round guys I am watching:
Mike Pouncey OG Florida 6' 5" 320
Prince Amukamara CB Nebraska 6' 1" 205
Von Miller OLB Texas A&M 6' 3" 240
Anthony Castonzo OT Boston College 6' 7" 295
Demarcus Love OT Arkansas 6' 5" 305
Dont'a Hightower* ILB Alabama 6' 4" 250
2nd rounders to watch:
Deunta Williams S UNC 6' 2" 205
Kristofer O'Dowd OC USC 6' 5" 300
Stefen Wisniewski OC Penn State 6' 3" 297
Jerrod Johnson QB Texas A&M 6' 5" 243

Should a new CBA be agreed to--and I hate to say it out loud after all the resources this team has poured into the DL with middling results--but I think it will be time for Bob to pull out the purse for the highest rated FA DT available. 2011 should see a boon to the FA market after so many (~200) were signed as RFA's due to the rules for 2010.
If that's the case then I agree that the BAP from FS, C, G, DT (to groom) should be at the top of the Texans board.

I put the date in my title simply to allow the flexibility to change my mind. :)
These are the guys I'll be watching. I don't know what Butch Davis is doing, but he's getting some very talented recruits to play football at a 'basketball' school. Yes, I'll be watching UNC whenever I can this season. Here's my list of players at positions I would be interested in drafting....

OLB Bruce Carter North Carolina 6'3" 230
OLB Dontay Moch Nevada 6'1" 240
OLB Chris Walker Tennessee 6'1" 240

I'm wondering where we'd play a 266lbs LB. Would we move Cushing to the WILL? That's the interesting pick to me that I don't see the Texans ever making.

When Bush was in Arizona, they had Pace who weighed in at 270. In 2007 Pace was an OLB and had a 107 tackles. Dansby was listed as 255, He also had over 100 tackles in 2007. So big LBs seem to be in Bush's background.
Johnny Holland on the other hand has a history of small quick LBs.
BTW IMO draftsite never has our picks right. They do not seem to care about the teams preferences.

With that in mind, I'd be curious about moving Connor Barwin to the SLB (6'4" 257lbs) compared to Calvin Pace (6'4" 265lbs) and sliding Cushing to WLB (6'3" 259) compared to Dansby (6'4" 250lbs).
Just a thought.

I have always thought Connor Barwin should be a SAM. And that would mean moving Cushing to WILL, oh my. That should make us better against the run but hurt us in the passing game.
What If we went 3-4, then we could have Barwin, Cushing, Ryans and Diles all on the field at one time.

It might hurt having Barwin on the field in the passing game on 1st or 2nd down, unless he's blitzing. :) On 3rd down, I'd put his hand on the ground and play him like a DE, just like now in our Nickle packages.
For what it's worth, we aren't built for a 3-4 because we don't have a NT. Okam doesn't have what it takes mentally to play the 2-Gap NT. Now, if we had drafted B.J. Raji or Dan Williams or somebody of that ilk, then what you are suggesting might be easier to implement. Not really sure there is a NT going to be available in the upcoming draft (Phil Taylor - Baylor??). The following draft either for that matter (D'Angelo McCray - Eastern Illinois??). So, do you feel like the team is better by removing Okoye and inserting Diles leaving Cody to play NT?

And I get what you are saying. Cushing is our best pass cover LB, he needs to be in our nickle, I am almost thinking that our nickle should be Cushing and Diles over Ryans, they are both better in pass coverage than Ryans.
As to my oh my comment, you don't see many 260 lb WILLs in the NFL. That would be some brute force coming off the free side.

I watched Stanford play UCLA last night. Luck definitely looks like the real deal. He as the measurables and he also has 'it' when it comes to commanding the huddle. Yet, I'd still place that Locker kid from Washington at the top of the list.

PK I'm thinking that Luck is just a soph redshirt this year, so he's got 2 more year of eligibility after 2010. Since he's a junior in terms of his education, he'll probably gradute in 2012 which means he may enter the 2012 Draft (and leave a year of eligilbity on the table, but of course I'm only speculating).
BTW, big game for QB Locker - those rough, tuff Cornhuskers are visiting Seattle Saturday and it's on national TV (2:30 PM CST, ABC). Should be fun.

WOW ! Did the young Mr Locker flunk that test or what ? That was embarrassing. I'd guess that pretty much ends any talk of him being the top pick in the 2011 Draft. Is he still even a first rounder ?
And BTW how bad will the Huskers embarrass UT in Lincoln later this fall ?
The Huskers were very impressive.

Well, It is about time Nebraska beat UT in Lincoln considering all the Nebraska doesn't lose in Lincoln smack talk when UT joined the Big 12. It has been 77 years since Nebraska protected their house from the Horns. I still will go with my Horns being able to win this game with their defense.

Yes, he did flunk that test. It became apparent that he's more of a Vince Young/Tim Tebow type QB who is better suited to run the ball. Wait a minute, both of those guys were drafted in the first round, weren't they?
Seriously, I believe that Ryan Mallett made himself the top QB prospect in this draft last weekend. Now all he has to do is keep it up for the rest of the season.

And Mallett appears to me to be 3rd round type. He has horrible footwork and he is slow on his decision, add the long frame and I do not have any desire to track Mallett as the top QB, Luck is my #1 QB period.

Since we're on the subject of QB's, I might get beat up on this board for saying this but I've been very impressed with Kellen Moore JR. from Boise St. The guy has a pistol release, makes fast decisions, and is impressing with his accuracy, not to mention knows how to avoid getting sacked. The biggest(and only) knock from what I've seen is his height being in the range of 6-0 to 6-1. But that sure didn't deter Drew Brees last year. He'd be a great 3rd rounder if he came out this year.

Is it too early to start looking at TEs? I wish I was joking. OD is not back. Dressen is okay, but isn't nearly the weapon OD was. Casey is small. Graham can't get off the milk carton. Anthony Hill is Joppru 2.0.
I expect TE to be a money position when AJ demands respect and LBs and safeties should start biting on play fakes to Foster.

I think I disagree on need to draft more TE's soon, but I'd like to see a few more plays to TE as well.
I think Kubiak more or less follows seniority on the team first, so until Dreesen is hurt or fails to perform, we won't see much of Casey or Graham.
We are 3-1 so not too frstrated right now. Some big passes to TE have worked.
Depends on play calling I think, not skill of TE's.
Casey and Graham both looked real good in preseason.
till we see some 3 and 4 TE sets, likely will continue as is.
Sure, OD, will be coming back a little more slowly than we expected as well.
I guess draft best player available and hopefully not a TE for a couple years is my thinking for the moment.
Right now, I'd probably go OL and then all defense, perhaps a great punter or kicker in late rounds.
O.D. just needs to get his playing legs and he will be fine.

I think he has lost a step, and that he will be allowed to go as a FA after the season. We have enough depth to offset his leaving after the season.
Well, as usual we agree to dissagree. Daniels needs time to regain his timing and tempo with Matt that they had last year before he was hurt. Dreeson will be the one gone in my estimation, if anyone does.

20 Julio Jones* WR Alabama 6' 4" 210

Not sure I agree with a WR in the 1st, but if they let Jacoby leave via FA, then this is possible.
Grabbing two young safeties is a possibility, but it means Wilson and Barber are gone.
Then adding another young late round CB seems unlikely. And what is up with a 186 lbs FB?
My Cherry Pick with us keeping Jones:

180 Greg McElroy QB Alabama 6' 3" 220

Three guys in the 2nd round, Brown is the new nickle, Dowling is moved to Safety, Acho is Barwin insurance. Pouncey is proving he is not an OC and he is a solid value at 84. Another young LB for ST and backup duty, a RB because you never have to many, a QB that just wins ever where he goes, and lastly our 1st drafted kicker.

211. Da'Norris Searcy S 6-0 210 UNC
This draft addresses our defensive woes by giving our secondary more quality depth and our D line some much needed youth, athleticism and size. It also gives us a quality OG with more size than we're accustom to and provides depth at WR (incase JJ leaves) and RB (insurance for Ben Tate).
If we end up in the playoffs (not likely now with the worst D in the league, and so many injuries to key players), then for the first time in this franchises history, I would be for trading up to get either 1) that dominant DT we have been looking for forever, or 2) another game changer on offense like AJ or similar.

Hmm, does seem it is defense that needs the help right now anyways.
I hope they can find the dominant DT somehow who can push middle of O-line back so opposing QB can't step up in pocket, then QB has to go out where our DE's will get him.
It does seem that a dominant DT would upset the pocket and force the QB to flee or get sacked. Oh boy how good that would be!

I'm hoping for another defensive end or the dramatic recovery of Barwin. Ugh! Mario can swing to the strong side if need be so the Texans can bring in a speed rusher.
DT Rick Fairly of Auburn looked pretty good in their game against LSU.
As for going to a 3-4, I echo that we don't have a verifiable NT, and besides they just cut DT Frank Okam, the only NT type we had on the roster.
All the talk about moving LBs around has also been answered by moving Cushing to Mike, leaving Diles at Will, and making Bentley the Sam. Not bad moves I guess.

SEATTLE – Andrew Luck's numbers were far from overwhelming, but that's not what stood out to Jim Harbaugh.

"To be mentally understanding the game the way he does is just remarkable," Harbaugh said.

Apparently Andrew Luck had another impressive performance over the weekend as he outplayed Wasington QB Jake Locker and Luck has no bigger fan than his coach at Stanford, which leads me to think that Harbaugh has a plan: get Luck to declare for the NFL Draft and come out early next year and then use the #1 pick on his Stanford QB he's going to have as the new HC of the Buffalo Bills. Currently based on the current standings, I have the Texans picking #14, and judging from the play I have been seeing that is close to where I think they pick. I am thinking 12th, but could be between 10th and 20th.
So based on the 14th pick, I see a coaching change and a move back to the 3-4. Say goodbye to Okoye, Daniel, Jones, and Turk.
I want us to sign two of the following FA NTs: Paul Soliai, Dolphins, Shaun Rogers, Browns, Alan Branch, Cards, Chris Hoke, Steelers.

If you happened to see the "Iron Bowl"/Auburn-'Bama game yesterday, you saw a lot of talent but the guy that impressed me the most was Nick Fairley, Auburns DT. BTW, what a game and what a comeback by Auburn.
I haven't seen Auburn much at all this year, and apparently Fairly is kinda streaky, but he sure impressed yesterday and it seems like the Texans could really use him in the middle of their DLine ?

I'm going to guess Fairly will be taken higher in the first round than the Texans will be. Watching Nevada's great comeback over Boise St. last night, there was a smallish DE by the name of Moat or Moak who was dominating Boise's OL last night. I don't think his size will hold up in the NFL but he looks like he could easily convert to a blitzing LB. If he's a senior, I wouldn't be surprised to see this guy in the second or third round.

Sounds like Von Miller, the smallish Aggie edge rusher, who's only 'bout 240 ?
I'd love it if the Texans went to the 3-4 next year, and I could see it happening if the old man tells Kubiak he can keep his job but he (McNair) is gonna tell him who his DC will be. These small, quick pass-rushers can often find a home in the 3-4, even in the NFL.

I believe Dontay Moch is who HPF Bob is referring to...a smaller, faster type of DE which could translate well in the pro's- maybe a 2nd round talent but could move up if what I've read is true about him possessing 4.24 speed:eek: Right now though, I prefer Von Miller over Moch.
Nick Fairley is a beast, I've said it before on this board. I really like him and am starting to think we might have a chance to get him if he's there around the 13-16 picks. I agree that he's a little streaky, but he's already better than what we have in the middle right now.
I've been hearing that the left side on the Wisconsin O-line is one of the best in the last 20 years and I'm starting to agree considering how Wisconsin is dismantling their Big Ten opponents by 50+ point margins. We might want to pick up one or both of Gabe Carimi OT, and John Moffit OG, considering our own left sided woes.
I still think our secondary is priority #1 , but if the value isn't there in the first or second round, I have no qualms addressing the D and O-line first.
I would love for us to go 3-4D next year. But Smithiak better trade up to get Fairly because the nosetackle is the linchpin for a 3-4. I have been high on that guy all year. And of course Frank Bush would have to go. How about Wade Phillips for DC?

I see Fairly as a DE in the 3-4, we have a couple of those right now. Currently, I do not see any NTs worth a 1st round pick in this draft. There are a couple guys who could be 2nd rounders and lower round types in this draft.
But IMO Fairly will be best served in a 4-3.

Texans keep dropping lower in the draft, they are currently picking #12. Not a bad effort DT, CB,OG and a PT.
12 Drake Nevis DT LSU 6' 1" 300
44 Shareece Wright CB USC 6' 0" 185
76 Orlando Franklin OG Miami 6' 7" 318
108 Mason Foster ILB Washington 6' 2" 244
140 Jeff Maehl WR Oregon 6' 1" 175
172 DeQuin Evans DE Kentucky 6' 2" 250
203 Chas Henry PT Florida 6' 3" 215
15 Stephen Paea DT Oregon State 6' 1" 285
47 John Moffitt OC Wisconsin 6' 4" 313
79 Austin Pettis WR Boise State 6' 3" 200
111 Marcus Gilchrist S Clemson 5' 11" 190
143 Nate Irving ILB North Carolina State 6' 1" 235
175 Jonathan Nelson CB Oklahoma 5' 11" 180
206 Jah Reid OT Central Florida 6' 7" 315
we dropped 3 spots with the win Sunday, good news bad news.
Not a bad draft, Moffitt is a OG right now and would most likely be a OG with the current staff.
My choices:
15 traded to KC so they can take Locker for 23, 55
23 DeAndre McDaniel S Clemson 6' 1" 190
47 Deunta Williams S UNC 6' 2" 205
55 Jimmy Smith CB Colorado 6' 2" 205
79 Jerrell Powe NT Mississippi 6' 2" 330
111 Andy Dalton QB TCU 6' 3" 215
143 Nate Irving ILB North Carolina State 6' 1" 235
175 Zach Roth OT TCU 6' 6" 316
206 Eddie Jones OLB/DE Texas 6' 3" 260
Now let the DBs play for reps on the field. Powe can be a force in the middle if we stay in a 4-3 or become the future (sign a FA for 2011) force at NT in a 3-4. Dalton is a project but has a gun and mobility. A couple of new LBs to battle for time. Roth is a project type OT.

I guess this is supposed to be a pretty deep DL draft, but not so deep in the secondary. Should be interesting toward end of March. I really hope there is no lockout in the spring.
I am convinced we need to replace both safeties if we can, in the draft next year (if there is going to be one). And follow that with a DT who can put an inside passrush on for us so the dadgum opposing QB doesn't have such a comfortable pocket to sit in all day, getting ready to throw.
I see Fairly as a DE in the 3-4, we have a couple of those right now. Currently, I do not see any NTs worth a 1st round pick in this draft. There are a couple guys who could be 2nd rounders and lower round types in this draft.

I did that, If we stay in a 4-3 then Dareus is a DT, if we go to a 3-4, Dareus is a DE.
With the 2nd rounder either the new guy or one of the current CBs is moving to Safety. Quin played Safety in college, Jackson has the size to be a Safety, and Dowling, my 3rd rounder, is a safety prospect also IMO.

My thinking is you would have a DT rotation of Okoye, Mitchell, Dareus/Paea, Fua. That would be some mix of quick and strong at the point.
In the defensive backfield you would have Pollard (if resigned), Nolan, Williams and Keo. The CBs would be Quin, Jackson, Allen, McMannis as a base, nice young talent with a new DB coach.
And I want to attach and attach the line of scrimmage.

I'd like to attach a few more wins to the total next year.
After the last couple of games I'm beginning to think that with this year's torching the corners are actually starting to play up to a near-NFL level. I'm thinking that it is possible that Quin and Jackson and whoever else may prove to be serviceable and this year's disaster might actually pay some dividends. A better DL would definitely help so I'm with you on DL with the first pick if that yields the best value. The DL got some decent push the last two weeks and the defense as a whole didn't look nearly as inept as it did in the earlier part of the season.

It appears to me that a couple things have happened to our defense in the last few weeks, one we signed Damione Lewis and he has gotten some push up the middle, two they have played Mark Anderson more and he has gotten pressure, and three they finally started using some exotic blitzes.
What if they had used the pressure from day one? What if we had another big bodied DT from day one? What if Barwin had not been hurt?
I think Kubiak keeps the training wheels on the defense to start the season and then lets the coaches take them off when their jobs are on the line. Man he seems to be a slow learner.

It does seem to be that way,.......and also he appears to be too loyal to his coaches as well as some players. He leans on coaches and players he is familiar with, like coaches he has been around in SF and Denver, as well as a lot of undrafted Colorado State players. IF he stays he must give up his influence on who Rick Smith would like to get when it comes to the defense. That is why I am for a President of operations person like a Parcells, or someone similar.

I thought about starting a thread on hiring Parcells to run the team, but he would not like any of our current players. IMO he would fire everybody from Rick Smith down to the practice squad players.
I like what he does to instill winning on a team, but he has not taken anyone to the Super Bowl in a long time. So has he lost his edge?
I'm leaning in favor of hiring a real GM and letting him decide who becomes the next HC like most team do it, not letting the HC hire the GM.

If we go to a 3-4 we are going to need more beef in the middle of the defensive line. And I do not see you addressing that, I know we could try to go after a NT in FA. Also Quinn is a high risk pick and size wise more a 4-3 DE IMO than a 3-4 DE. I like 300+ lbs for my 3-4 DE. I would trade Mario Williams, but not sure you will get much with him being in a rehab situation, so I will get #32 from the Pats because I would take Miller at our #11, and this mock has him at 32.

This is my worst fear about converting to the 3-4. The Mario Factor is the key, can he play in the 3-4 and excel, and if not they would probably not trade him for a year after trying to answer that question. At that point his value would be diminished. In the above scenario the Patriots would be lauded as geniuses, and rightfully so, and the Texans would look like morons. And I don't think relying on two rookies safties is the way to go either.
I just think we can build a good (4-3) defense under new coaching/regime just fine with some of the personnel we already have, namely Mario. Maybe I'm wrong, but this is the thing that keeps me from the Cowher or Bust bandwagon.

I did not say that this group was the starters in 2011, but they should be solid starters by 2013. Also I am not on the Cowher or bust band wagon, I was simply responding to another posters 3-4 mock. My original cherry pick was for a 4-3. In my original cherry I went with two DTs and 2 safeties, but I do not think a guy should play until he has earned the playing time, one of my complaints against Kubiak.
I currently believe Kubiak is coming back next year with a new defensive coordinator. Hopefully someone like John Fox or Marvin Lewis. But a former HC is unlikely and I and the fans will be underwhelmed by the move.

Yea, I didn't address the NT position because I think Lewis, our recently signed DT is capable. I believe Quinn is very capable of being an OLB in a 3-4. He bounced between a 4-3 and 3-4 some at UNC.
I think Paea is a harder sell in a 3-4. Fua, IMO, is a little undersized for the NT.

Seth Payne was smaller than Fua, so I'm hoping he can become a force in the middle. As for Paea he is a penetrator and that is what I want in my 3-4, that is the way that Wade Phillips runs the 3-4.

Again not a bad draft, but if we go to a 3-4, do we have a spot for Dareus who IMO is a DE in the 3-4. I know we need to upgrade the DEs for the 3-4 but Mario and Antonio should be the starters at DE.
My mock/cherry pick has a trade involved in it. We give #8 & 72 for the 49ers pick at #6

The other option is one this team is not inclined to do and that is Ngata will be franchised, so go sign him and give up the 2 first round draft picks. Having Ngata is better than any pick they could draft at #8.
Thing is we could have had Nata back when he first came out for just exercising him as our pick, BUT we didn't, and I'm not for going back now and giving up 2 future first rounders to make up for what we should have done in the first place.

My main objective, initially, was to improve the pass rush. I believe I accomplished that with my first two picks. I think WR is a concern with J.Jones possibly leaving through FA and the lingering ankle injury of AJ. I think our passing game suffered this year as a result of the latter, Floyd is a stud who has time to develop. While I'm content with Pollard in run support and in blitz packages, he's horrible in coverage and Wilson is getting a little long at the tooth. Nolan and Barber are still suspect, IMO. This tandem of Jarrett and Smith could be something special. Mohamed bolsters our LB corp and Maddox replaces S.Slaton in the RB rotation. Tate is still a relative unknown and an injury to A.Foster would cripple our ground game.

After watching some bowl games, not liking what I saw from Prince, overrated IMO, and thinking maybe Wade runs a hybrid defense. Here is another attempt at this one by me.
8 Von Miller OLB Texas A&M 6' 3" 240

136 Eric Hagg S Nebraska 6' 2" 205
168 Benjamin Ijalana OT/OG Villanova 6' 4" 320
199 Chas Henry PT Florida 6' 3" 215
This is way to early for Miller and I know that, but I think we win tomorrow, or I would try to trade down if Peterson and Fairley are gone when we pick. In a 3-4 Miller and Barwin are my OLBs with Cushing and Ryans in the Middle, Sharpton is the future MLB.
Wisniewski is a stud who can play OG or OC, and he should be a late 1st rounder, but if he drops to us we need to solidify that RG position. Ellis gives that big body to play the true NT.
I agree with Blitzwood, we need a safety tandem, and I not know Smith from Notre Dame, but I do know Hagg. Jarrett and Hagg shoud have to earn there time, not be handed it.
The All American punter from Florida will give us a big leg now, and Ijalana will be allowed to develop and possibly be a OG in our system.
If the team can pull off getting another 2nd round pick I would grab Mike Pouncey and then our middle of the OL is set for a long time. Pouncey, Wisniewski, Caldwell in some combination would be the future OL.
As for the the NT postion, I would go out in FA and sign one or two of the following guys:John Henderson, DT, Raiders ; Ronald Fields, NT Denver; Ron Edwards, NT KC(Klein Forest/ A&M grad); Shaun Smith, NT, KC; Paul Soliai, NT Dolphins, Haloti Ngata DE/NT Ravens (he will be Franchised and cost two 1st round picks); Chris Hoke, NT Steelers; Remi Ayodele, DT Saints; Bryan Robinson, NT, Arizona; Gabe Watson, NT, Arizono; Alan Branch, DE/NT, Arizona; Aubrayo Franklin, NT, 49ers; Brandon Mebane, DT, Seattle.
Let Ellis develop behind two veteran NT with experience in the NFL, that will help this team now and later.

Has a schedule for FA's being available or draft date been set given CBA is still very much in question.
or even if do draft or open FA season, when signings can start to be official, likely after CBA agreed?
I'd like them to just agree to change rookie first round top 10 salary limits, see how that effects things, TV contracts seem to be growing so revenues to teams and players will grow without any changes, and then leave rest as is for a few years, get on with it.
You think there will be a new CBA soon? All I see is a power struggle, with the season likely in the balance.

Kubiak was trying to get a job......Wade was too... The one common thread in all this is McNair. He's the same buffoon who was convinced that Carr was serviceable and gave him a ridiculous extension, and the same buffoon who gave his HC an extension despite performing at or below mediocrity. This franchise is a mess and it all starts at the top. There are multiple instances this year and in the past that clearly indicates this.

Here's a 1rst round mock. The mock has us taking Akeem Ayers (OLB - UCLA). I looked up video of Ayers and he looks like a good player, but seems a bit stiff or slightly slower than I'd prefer in a rushing 3-4 DE/OLB. The mock has Von Miller going 18, so I think I'd cherrypick Miller if we were to go OLB.

STEPHEN PAEA HAS for the second consecutive year been voted the winner of the Morris Trophy. Paea becomes the fourth two-time recipient of the award, having won it in 2009, and becomes the fourth Beaver to win the Morris Trophy, joining Esera Tuaolo (1989), Inoke Breckterfield (1998) and Bill Swancutt (2004).
The Morris Trophy is given to the outstanding offensive and defensive linemen in the Pac-10. The selection procedure is unique -- the starting offensive linemen in the Pac-10 vote for the defensive winner and vice versa.
**
Stephen Paea, the 6-1, 311-pound senior from Los Altos, Calif., whose only Pac-10 offer was from Oregon State coming out of junior college, also received received the 2010 Pac-10 Conference Pat Tillman Defensive Player of the Year honor

My point, obviously, is that one should not take at face value Wade's assertion that he can run his defense with the personnel he has now. He's not going to come in and immediately take a dump on the slapstick defense these clowns have assembled.
Solomon mentioned in his blog the other day what Vegas thinks of the Texans' chances at the playoffs next year:
"Bodog.com has the Texans at +175 to make the postseason and -215 at not making it."
Hilarious. McNair may be fooling the necks around here by hiring a pair of hometown goons but he certainly isn't fooling Las Vegas.

I thought Bailey at 28 was a solid pick, he's got everything you look for in a 3-4 DE. Next I took the guess work out of the Texans draft war room and picked the brothers of two pro-bowlers:cool:. Bruce Carter will man the other OLB spot opposite Matthews. Binns gives us the REAL #2 we've needed for some time now, I think JJ will look for a payraise elsewhere this coming season anyways. Tejay gives us some depth in the secondary and Gray could some day be our NT, he's very hard to block down low. Henery kills two birds withe one stone, he's our PK and our punter. And a very good one at that.

Smith is more athlete than refined pass-rusher at this stage, but he has a great wing-span and is a perfect size and speed combination to develop as an outside linebacker. We know Houston has to address the defensive side of the ball and Smith is the kind of high-upside player that will fly up the board as personnel people start seeing the tape. He'll improve a weak pass rush.
Kuharsky on fit: The Texans need to stock up at linebacker with their move to a 3-4, so Smith could make sense. Especially if there is no super value defensive back here.
Side note - Kiper currently has Von Miller going 8th to the.....Titans.

The need for LBs is really due to the fact that we don't know how strong Barwin and Ryans come back from injury, so I wouldn't mind taking two in the draft or getting one from Free Agency and drafting another. Bruce Carter of UNC would be a great fit in my opinion as an ILB who has the speed to cover a TE. An OLB like Aldon Smith makes sense if Patrick Peterson or Prince Amukamara are not available at #11. I'd almost be willing to trade up for one of those big CBs. Other OLB candidates include Justin Houston, Jabaal Sheard, Jeremy Beal, KJ Wright, or Sam Acho. If we want to groom an OLB and not use a high pick, then Brooks Reed, Wayne Daniels, Markus White, Ugo Chinasa, Eddie Jones, Cheta Ozougwu, or Steven Friday may be options to look at late.
I'm also targeting a NT like Jarvis Jenkins or Jerrell Powe in this draft.

He has some 'red flags' that are making me shy away. He's also very tall, so I'd rather simply sign Gabe Watson or Alan Branch in Free Agency. I know what I'd get from them.

I just can't help but think of Demarcus Ware when I see Quinn rush the QB. Ahmad Black is a no brainer, perhaps the best instincts of this safety class. Pouncy helps shore up our Oline and gives it a nasty streak its been severely lacking all these years. Dalton gives us a backup QB to groom and potentially take over some day, and him being a local kid only helps him. Quan is a LB with versatility to plug in the middle or outside. Mike Blanc is an underrated player who's solid against the run and can pressure the passer. Hill shores up the Dline at the NT, very stout against the run, his highlight reel is ridicules.
Smith and Allen out of Notre dame are probably the two best players at their postion's that nobody's heard of(I like that line), real sleepers of the draft. Our secondary and backup RB spots are some real areas of concern for me. As is our WR depth, Shorts and Caleb aren't too shaby for UDFA's.
I was hoping we could finally start to draft for BPA but with last years abominable defense, it looks like we will still be stuck in the NEED mode. Need being CB & FS followed closely by NT.

11 J.J. Watt Wisconsin DE34 Drafttek.com's DRAFTSIM model draws JJ Watt for the 2nd consecutive week! Uncle Wade ends up with maybe the top 3-4 DE in this year's draft. Watt plays the game with a tenacity and passion not often seen today and is the first building block in Houston's conversion to a 3-4 defense. The Texans' current roster only has 2 candidates to play DE in a 3-4: Mario Williams and Antonio Smith. Watt compliments this duo nicely and provides an excellent rotation pattern for the 3-man line. - Long Ball
42 DeAndre McDaniel Clemson SS The Houston Texans had the worst secondary in the league last year -- there, I've said it! McDaniel was a pre-season darling, had his ups and downs for Clemson during the year, but is a ball-hawking safety whose reaction instincts and "football speed" belies his forty time. Not only will this selection solidify Houston's young CB's and improve the turnover ratio in 2011, but provides a more physical presence in run support with the advent of Wade Phillips' new 3-4 alignment. - Long Ball
73 Johnny Patrick Louisville CB
104 Christian Ballard Iowa DE34
141 Justin Boren Ohio State OG
172 Jeremy Kellem Middle Tennessee FS
202 Kenny Rowe Oregon OLB34
Where I like Watts and Ballard, I have many more needs with the conversion, and DE is not biggest need. Unless I am trading Mario, I do not see two 34 DEs in this draft.

And the climb begins, Von Miller has had a wonderful week at Mobile and this mock has him going #5 to Arizona, wow!
11 Houston Texans: Aldon Smith, DE/OLB, Missouri
Rejoice, Texans fans! Wade Phillips is your new defensive coordinator.
With the shift to the 3-4, Houston will need a nose tackle to pair with ends Mario Williams and Antonio Smith. DeMeco Ryans and Brian Cushing would play inside linebacker, while the outside pass rushers would be Connor Barwin and... umm... Aldon Smith.
Smith missed some action this year, which would explain why he had only 10 TFL and 4.5 sacks. However, he's a freak of nature and pretty much a lock for the top 15. Smith has drawn comparisons to Jason Pierre-Paul in terms of raw athleticism. I think he's more 4-3, but he does project well into the 3-4.
42 Houston Texans: Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado
The Texans will be targeting a rush linebacker and a cornerback with their top two selections in the 2011 NFL Draft. Aldon Smith filled the former need with the 11th pick in the first round. Jimmy Smith would satisfy the latter.
Despite taking Kareem Jackson in the first round of last year's draft, Houston still must address the cornerback position. Kareem Jackson has to improve, while Glover Quin would be better served as the nickel.
73 Houston Texans: Deunta Williams, FS, North Carolina
The Texans desperately need to address both safety positions this offseason. Free safety is more dire, as Eugene Wilson and Troy Nolan have both failed there.
104 Houston Texans: Ian Williams, NT, Notre Dame
Houston's current nose tackle is Amobi Okoye. If he doesn't pan out in his new position, the Texans will need a Plan B.
I'm going to suggest something that it seems I do every year, if the draft falls like this does, trade down. Someone will be looking at a QB and not wanting to pay top 10 money, trade down and get picks for later.
But I will play with what is here:
11 Aldon Smith, DE/OLB, Missouri top 34 OLB available
42 Quinton Carter, S, Oklahoma
73 Brooks Reed, DE/OLB, Arizona
104 Greg Salas, WR, Hawaii
There are 3 OL guys that I would consider: Stefen Wisniewski, Mike Pouncey, and John Moffitt, Might be willing to take one of htese guys instead of a defensive need pick.

I have a couple of questions after the Senior Bowl week of practice and the game.
1) How high will Phil Taylor NT Baylor rise before the draft? Is he going to be like Raji and jump into the 1st round? Raji went #9 to Green Bay in 09.
2) Is Von Miller overhyped?
3) Should we go NT in the 1st and then take Reed later to play OLB?
4) Is our middle of the OL OK if we pass on guys like Wisniewski, Pouncey, Hudson, Moffitt or Danny Watkins Baylor? Anyone of those guys would improve our interior OL in the long run. But how else are we going to get defensive guys that we need?

1. I look at Phil Taylor and think about a few recent drafts...
Dan Williams - #26
Ron Brace - #40
Torell Troup - #41
Linval Joseph - #46
Terrence Cody - #57
Terrence Knighton - #72
Pat Sims - #26
----There isn't a BJ Raji type player in this draft. I'm hopeful that Jarvis Jenkins will be around in the 3rd round sort of like Roy Miller was, but we may just have Sean Cody as our NT this year unless we sign a Free Agent.
2. Yes, he is a bit overhyped. I liked Brian Orapko better than Miller and he was drafted #13.
3. No to the first and yes to the second. A CB would be my preference in the 1st, but only if they are a stud. Otherwise, a trade down and selecting a 5-Tech may be best.
4. I think a decent OL prospect can be selected in the 4th or possibly 5th round. John Moffit or Tim Barnes?

11 Aldon Smith Missouri OLB34
A top-flite conversion project for Wade Phillips' 3-4 scheme, Smith played DE for Mizzou -- at 6'5" and 260 lbs, if he displays the ability to play on 2 feet and cover the flanks, the Texans' defense will have made great strides (because we already know he can rush the passer). This is the first step in rebuilding Houston's front seven, because if you don't have OLB's, you don't have a 3-4. - Long Ball

Ballard was the 2nd best pass-rusher in the Senior Bowl to Cameron Jordan and plays the game with a tenacity and passion not often seen today. Thanks, I based it on the Joe Flacco trade we did a while back. I like Watts opposite Mario, but with Antonio(or whomever) coming off the bench to keep the pass rush fresh and the corners bottled up. I'm pretty high on Watts as a 3-4 DE in this draft, as well as Drake Nevis. I love the high motor these guys displayed every game. I'm not that high on Antonio Smith, I thought he played very undisciplined last year, caused alot of unnecessary penalties , the injury to Barwin, the hot and cold play, and then the spat with Cushing on the field left me thinking we could do better. I know he came here because of Frank Bush, maybe he might want to follow him wherever he ends up, IMO.
This draft is loaded with DE's and OLB's.

As for Smith, and he was also our most consistent pass rusher all season.

I'm glad Bush is in Tennessee, maybe he'll screw up their defense like he did ours...we can only hope. The Titans should give us 2 easy wins with a rookie head coach and most likely a rookie QB next year, but these are the Texans we're talking about,(see Sanchez and Ryan in their debut) let's just wait and see.
As for Smith being the most consistent pass rusher all season, whatever that means, doesn't really hold water.
A. Smith- 38 TKL 4 SK
M.Williams- 28 TKL 8.5 SK
M.Anderson- 21 TKL 4 SK
A. Okoye- 44 TKL 4 SK
Mario still had twice as many as any other pass rusher on the team, and he missed a game and a half, and Anderson only played 11 games for us and still equaled Smith's season total of 4, an average of 1 sack every 4 games...
With such a deep DE and OLB class this year, we really have a golden opportunity to solidify those position(s) for the next decade or so.
In other news, the Texans released 5 players 2/18 including Eugene Wilson FS, and Andre Davis WR.

The Texans have released the following players: FS Eugene Wilson, WR André Davis, LB Isaiah Greenhouse, LB Darnell Bing and DT DeMario Pressley.
Wilson started 13 games at free safety in 2010, finishing with 56 tackles. He joined the club before the 2008 season, after playing the first five years of his career with the Patriots.

Wasn't a complete season, but here is an article thru week 10 in Football Outsiders (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stat-analysis/2010/2010-hits-and-hurries)
In week 10 Mario (22.5) was 3rd in Hurries, and Smith (21) was 9th.
As for QB hits Smith (11) was tied for 5th, Mario had 10 and was tied for 7th.
I know I've seen the final number on another web site, but can not find them right now, iirc Smith ended up leading the team in hurries and hits. These things can be as frustrating to a QB as a sack, if your name is not Brady.

I agree slightly that Antonio Smith had some very costly negative plays, penalties, for us, so he needs to play a little smarter.
But, he did seem to play with more fire and emotion than a lot of guys on the plus side. Hopefully he can be more consistent and play well for us in future.

11 Aldon Smith Missouri OLB34 6-5 260
Aldon Smith has been moving up the Big Board and the athletic pass-rusher from Mizzou has to prove he can make the conversion to an all-around OLB in Wade Phillips 3-4 alignment. He did play on two feet for the Tigers, most often rushing the passer. Training in coverage responsibilities will be the next step in his progression. At 6'5" and 260 lbs, he immediately adds a presence to the flanks. If a team doesn't have OLB's, there is no point in running a 3-4! - Long Ball
42 Christian Ballard Iowa DE34 6-4 288
The front 7 conversion project of Wade's 3-4 continues - Ballard was the 2nd best pass-rusher in the Senior Bowl to Cameron Jordan and plays the game with a tenacity and passion not often seen today. After Smith (OLB34) in the 1st round, this is the next building block in Houston's conversion to a 3-4 defense. The Texans' current roster only has 2 candidates to play DE in a 3-4: Mario Williams and Antonio Smith. Ballard compliments this duo nicely and provides an excellent rotation pattern for the 3-man line. - Long Ball

here is there take on the Texans 5 picks in this mock:
#11 Houston Texans: Robert Quinn, DE/OLB, North Carolina
With the shift to Wade Phillips' 3-4, Houston will need a nose tackle to pair with ends Mario Williams and Antonio Smith. DeMeco Ryans and Brian Cushing would play inside linebacker, while the outside pass rushers would be Connor Barwin and... umm... Robert Quinn.
Quinn missed the 2010 season because the NCAA is ridiculously stupid, hypocritical and tyrannical. If he had played, he'd probably be a consensus top-five prospect, so Houston is getting major value with this selection.
Other 2011 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. Aldon Smith, DE/OLB - Other rush linebacker options. If Robert Quinn is off the board, Aldon Smith could be Houston's new pass-rusher.
2. Cameron Jordan or J.J. Watt, DE/DT - The Texans want an upgrade at five technique, and either Cameron Jordan or J.J. Watt could be the best player on Houston's board.
3. Prince Amukamara, CB - Prince Amukamara could be the pick if he's available. The Texans are looking for a top-flight cornerback to pair with Kareem Jackson.
#42 Houston Texans: Brandon Harris, CB, Miami
The Texans will be targeting a rush linebacker and a cornerback with their top two selections in the 2011 NFL Draft. Robert Quinn filled the former need with the 11th pick in the first round. Brandon Harris, the top player available, would satisfy the latter.
Despite taking Kareem Jackson in the first round of last year's draft, Houston still must address the cornerback position. Kareem Jackson has to improve, while Glover Quin would be better served as the nickel or free safety.
#73 Houston Texans: Jerrell Powe, NT, Ole Miss
With Amobi Okoye as their only option, the Texans are in the market for a nose tackle. Jerrell Powe is certainly worth taking in the third round.
#104 Houston Texans: Deunta Williams, FS, North Carolina
The Texans desperately need to address both safety positions this offseason. Free safety is more dire, as Eugene Wilson was recently released.
#135 Houston Texans: Joe Lefeged, S, Rutgers
Bernard Pollard is great in run support, but he's a huge liability in coverage. That's not a good thing if you're trying to beat Peyton Manning twice a year.
How can I complain about Quinn, Harris, Powe, Williams and Lefeged, my only issue I don't have many of these guys available when we take them in this mock.
With no starting safeties on the team any more, safeties has become a huge need with this team. Quinn and Nolan maybe the safeties next year, and I can be ok with that, but we need a talent influx and numbers added to the DBs on this team.

One good thing about Moch, Wade Phillips worked with him at the Shriners game, so Wade will have insight into the kid, if Wade likes the kid we draft him, if Wade doesn't like the kid he is not drafted here.
Will Moch be a Texan? I can't say but our draft grade will have Wade's fingerprints all over it.

11 Robert Quinn North Carolina OLB34
Could the Mighty Quinn really fall this far? Uncle Wade sure hopes so, as the athletic Tar Heel pass-rusher is quite the specimen (should we say "Trophy Prospect") even if he did take last year off. He still has to prove he can make the conversion to an all-around OLB in Phillips' 3-4 alignment. He did move around quite a bit for North Carolina, most often rushing the passer - training in coverage responsibilities will be the next step in his progression. At 6'4" and 265 lbs, he immediately adds a presence to the flanks and if a team doesn't have OLB's, there is no point in running a 3-4.
#42 Johnny Patrick Louisville CB
A slick covering CB that has been moving up the Big Board ranks -- those of you who have not seen many Big East games have not witnessed one of the shining stars for the Louisville Cardinals. Let's face it -- Houston had the worst defensive secondary in the league last year and Patrick adds some much needed "attitude" to the corner position on the Texan defense. It was no secret to AFC South QB's that if they had time, Houston's secondary could be beat. Yes, Uncle Wade still has some needs on the front 7 positions for his 3-4 conversion project, but the secondary could not be ignored and this is excellent value at a position of dire need!
#73 Sione Fua Stanford DT34
#104 Steven Friday Virginia Tech OLB34
#141 Will Rackley Lehigh OG
#172 Jermale Hines Ohio State FS
#202 Nate Williams Washington SS
I'm starting to like the idea of Quinn at 11, he should be gone higher, and he would be out of character for the Texans to draft, but he was a stud on tape.

I know Kubiak is no Bill Bellichick, but
memba him? I saw a show on NFL network the other day
about the 2004 Patriots that gave me the idea.
http://www.patriotsgab.com/2007/11/27/wr-brown-activated/
The New England Patriots on Tuesday activated wide receiver Troy Brown from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, reviving the career of one of the most versatile players from the team’s three Super Bowl victories. He had been placed on the PUP list on August 28; he resumed practicing with the team on November 12, giving the Patriots until 4 PM EST Tuesday (today) to either activate, release or put him on injured reserve.
Brown, an 8th-round selection in the 1993 draft, has spent his entire career with the Patriots; as the longest-tenured member of the team, he has 557 career receptions (1st on franchise history) and 6,366 receiving yards (2nd all-time). He is also the team’s all-time leading punt returner with 246 returns for 2,570 yards; his 3 punt returns for touchdowns ties Irving Fryar for the team record.
During the 2004 season, Patriots head coach Bill Bellichick put Brown into a depleted secondary at cornerback; the move paid dividends as he responded with 14 tackles, 3 interceptions and 3 fumbles recovered. Brown also played defense in 2006, although on a more limited basis.

Thanks, I had forgotten this one. But I will also point out Brown was a seasoned veteran WR who understood route trees, offensive game plans and such, this is knowledge that Dickerson is still learning.
Brown was a solid contributor before the move and Dickerson is a bottom of the roster guy.
So I still say no way he is converted.

Thanks, I had forgotten this one. But I will also point out Brown was a seasoned veteran WR who understood route trees, offensive game plans and such, this is knowledge that Dickerson is still learning.
Brown was a solid contributor before the move and Dickerson is a bottom of the roster guy.
So I still say no way he is converted.Brown was also a band-aid for the Pats' secondary rather than a permanent conversion to the other side of the ball.
The most successful offense-to-defense convert that I can think of is Nolan Cromwell, who was a QB at Kansas and a Pro Bowl safety for the LA Rams in the 80s. Tony Dungy was a QB at Minnesota and a backup DB for the Steelers in the 70s. Former Nebraska QB Scott Frost hung around for a few years as a safety, but mainly as backup and special teamer. And speaking of Nebraska QBs, who could forget the Texans' Jammal Lord experiment? :p There was an Ohio State RB named Butler By'Not'e who the Broncos drafted in 1994 and converted to CB but he never did much. Former Texas A&M RB Sirr Parker tried to switch to CB in the NFL but wasn't able to catch on.
I don't think they should try to convert Dickerson, especially this year when there's going to be little or no offseason coaching. Even in a more normal year it would be tough to do this because there's no NFL-Europe where he could get offseason reps in game conditions and with free agency there's less incentive to make the extra effort to develop a guy who may leave by the time he's ready to really contribute.

11 Robert Quinn North Carolina OLB34
For the 2nd consecutive week, the Mighty Quinn falls to Houston; the athletic Tar Heel pass-rusher is quite the specimen (should we say "Trophy Prospect") even if he did take last year off. - Long Ball
42 Cameron Heyward Ohio State DE34
The front 7 conversion project of Wade's 3-4 continues - Cameron Heyward (son of "Iron-Head") has dropped in the rankings after receiving a pre-season 1st round grade based on his junior season. Although the Buckeye's senior year was not as dominant, he is good value in the 2nd round. After Quinn (OLB34) in the 1st round, this is the next building block in Houston's conversion to a 3-4 defense. The Texans' current roster only has 2 candidates to play DE in a 3-4: Mario Williams and Antonio Smith. Heyward compliments this duo nicely and provides an excellent rotation pattern for the 3-man line. - Long Ball

Well it looks like we get the #253 pick, not many last picks of the draft have an impact on the team, so I say draft a punter, preferably Chas Henry Florida if he is not already gone.
My 2nd choice is Derek Epperson, Baylor a big kid with a big leg 6-3 235. Averaged over 44 yds each of the last two years.

11 Houston Texans: Robert Quinn, DE/OLB, North Carolina
1. Cameron Jordan or J.J. Watt, DE/DT - The Texans want an upgrade at five-technique, and either Cameron Jordan or J.J. Watt could be the best player on Houston's board.
2. Aldon Smith, DE/OLB - Another rush linebacker option. If Robert Quinn is off the board, Aldon Smith could be Houston's new pass-rusher.
3. Prince Amukamara, CB - Prince Amukamara could be the pick if he's available. The Texans are looking for a top-flight cornerback to pair with Kareem Jackson.
42 Houston Texans: Stephen Paea, NT, Oregon State
With Amobi Okoye as their only option, the Texans are in the market for a nose tackle.
Stephen Paea isn't as big as some 3-4 teams would like, but he's the prototypical nose tackle for a Wade Phillips defense. The Texans are getting a steal with Paea; the Combine bench press record-holder would be a first-round pick if it weren't for his knee injury.
Pick change; previously Allen Bailey, DE/DT
73 Houston Texans: Johnny Patrick, CB, Louisville
Despite taking Kareem Jackson in the first round of last year's draft, Houston still must address the cornerback position. Jackson has to improve, while Glover Quin would be better served as the nickel or free safety.
Pick change; previously Jerrell Powe, NT
105 Houston Texans: Jaiquawn Jarrett, FS, Temple
The Texans will be moving Glover Quin to free safety. They'll need an alternative option just in case that doesn't pan out.
Pick change; previously Marcus Gilchrist, CB
Houston Texans: Ahmad Black, SS, Florida
Bernard Pollard is great in run support, but he's a huge liability in coverage. That's not a good thing if you're trying to beat Peyton Manning twice a year.
Pick change; previously Joe Lefeged, S
178 Houston Texans: Rick Elmore, DE/OLB, Arizona
I'd be pretty surprised if the Texans didn't draft multiple rush linebackers this April for their new 3-4 defense.
Cherry picking this one is harder to do cause I like this mock. So how about this one?

#11Houston Texans: Aldon Smith, DE/OLB, Missouri
The Texans will spend a ton of 2011 NFL Draft picks on personnel for Wade Phillips' new 3-4 defense. Their top three needs are rush linebacker, defensive end (five-technique) and nose tackle. Cornerback also will be addressed, but from what I'm told, Houston has "some concerns" about using this selection on Prince Aumukamara.
The best player available of those three aforementioned positions could arguably be Aldon Smith. Some may think this is a bit too early for Smith, but I couldn't disagree more. It's never too early to draft a potential double-digit sack artist. Pass-rushing defensive ends often go earlier than projected.
Smith missed some action this year, which would explain why he had only 10 TFL and 4.5 sacks. However, he's a freak of nature and pretty much a lock for the top 15. He has drawn comparisons to Jason Pierre-Paul in terms of raw athleticism. The Cowboys have shown interest in him, likening him to DeMarcus Ware. Coincidentally, Ware was chosen with the 11th pick six years ago.
Other 2011 NFL Draft Possibilities:
1. J.J. Watt or Cameron Jordan, DE/DT - The Texans want another five-technique, and they'll consider J.J. Watt and Cameron Jordan.
2. Prince Amukamara, CB - Prince Amukamara could be the pick if he's available. As I said though, the Texans have "some concerns" about spending back-to-back first-round picks on cornerbacks. They appear focused on upgrading the front seven.
Pick change; previously J.J. Watt, DE/DT
#42Houston Texans: Stephen Paea, NT, Oregon State
With Amobi Okoye as their only option, the Texans are in the market for a nose tackle.
Stephen Paea isn't as big as some 3-4 teams would like, but he's the prototypical nose tackle for a Wade Phillips defense. The Texans are getting a steal with Paea; the Combine bench press record-holder would be a first-round pick if it weren't for his knee injury.
#73Houston Texans: Jarvis Jenkins, DE/DT, Clemson
As mentioned in Round 1, the Texans are looking for numerous 3-4 personnel upgrades, including five-technique. Jarvis Jenkins is a second-round prospect who falls here out of circumstance.
Pick change; previously Chris Carter, DE/OLB
#105Houston Texans: Rashad Carmichael, CB, Virginia Tech
Despite taking Kareem Jackson in the first round of last year's draft, Houston still must address the cornerback position. Jackson has to improve, while Glover Quin would be better served as the nickel or free safety.
#138 Houston Texans: Ahmad Black, SS, Florida
Bernard Pollard is great in run support, but he's a huge liability in coverage. That's not a good thing if you're trying to beat Peyton Manning twice a year.
#178 Houston Texans: Jerrard Tarrant, S, Georgia Tech
The Texans will be moving Glover Quin to free safety. They'll need an alternative option just in case that doesn't pan out.
Pick change; previously Eric Hagg, S
Not a lot of changes but some. I wish someone would tell this guys that Okoye is not being considered the NT. But I do like Paea in Wade's system.
They want to move Quin to FS and they have cut Pollard. So a glaring need is going to be SS as well as CB.
Right now I like OLB Aldon Smith or NT Phil Taylor for our #1 pick. The 11th pick would be too early for either of them, I think. So we trade down........?

CB The Prince - Just because KJ wasn't very good means we SHOULD get another CB, not ignore the position.
NT Phil Taylor - Surprised he lasted until the 2nd round
OLB Chris "X-Files" Carter - A bargain pass-rusher.
WR Randall Cobb - I love this guy and he makes Jacoby expendable.
FS Mark LeGree - Don't understand why more scouts aren't talking this guy up. I want a FS with Ballskills.
DE Brandon Bair - Will need to add weight, but has the frame
C Kris O'Dowd - I will continue to try to replace our current OC.

I've been wavering alot on Prince lately, and this is why:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVeWn3bwWTg
I really like the kid and wouldn't mind at all if we took him at 11, but I hope he doesn't have many games for us like he did against Blackmon. But I know Blackmon is a top 3 player next year. There's also alot of good tape out there on Prince. With that said, I think Prince is still getting better and don't see much of a drop off between him and Peterson. I'm a LSU fan and there was plenty of times I scratched my head on some of the gambles and plays Peterson made. FWIW, I actually think there's a better chance of having Quinn fall to us than Prince because of the medical on Quinn.
I liked the Bowers-Acho combo, but with all the reports about his knee and him projecting better in a 4-3, I lean towards Cameron Jordan as my end and Acho/Sheard are are toss ups in my book. I took Sheard because he's got a nastiness about him when he plays. I prefer Burton over House, but I REALLY like Legree. Brandon Bair from Oregon is another player I'm really liking at end if we go CB early. Jaiquawn Jarrett is another player I like in the mid rounds as a safety that isn't afraid to light people up at center field. I read somewhere the Texans weren't too high on Aldon Smith, but I believe there just sending out smoke screens.
I'd be good with:
1. Aldon Smith OLB
2. Sam Acho OLB (Barwin will need to be brought back slowly)
3. Jaiquawn Jarrett S / Brandon Burton CB
4. Nate Irving ILB (Diddo for Demeco)

So, I am ready for the draft using RP's evaluations and a few estimates by a few others who study this more than I. I day to go to see what will happen.
I think they should keep everyone on offense for 2011-12 they had last year. They are good enough already, don't change it at all, keep it consistent.
Add some good backups via draft to defense, and get some Free Agents to help defense as starters, including maybe a couple of all-star, pro-bowler guys.
If they want to draft a punter in seventh round but all the rest defense is what I expect. Pass rushers in front seven and ball hawks in secondary, guys with good accomplishments during their college days.
